As of right now, I believe this is how the pre-ordering will be. I can't speak for Bungie, but you never know, digital pre-orders for consoles could happen.
If I come across any information or if anyone else can shed some light on this, we certainly will.

I have the same concern. Like Moondawg said I preordered the disc. Downloaded the beta and returned the $5 preorder towards a new controller. I would much rather be able to preorder the digital copy that I wanted. This seems to have worked for me, unless something changes. As of right now I'm still showing that I will receive an email from bungie when the beta is available and I'm still able to log in the latest codes. It's not the way I wanted to do things but so far it is working. If you would like I will keep you posted.
