Wait a minute…
Was 6-player max teams in Destiny confirmed in this Lars Bakken interview with GameInformer (posted December 9th)?
Am I reading something between the lines out of context here?
I know this interview itself is old news, but I have to ask because I have seen no threads in #Destiny making an uproar over this, which seems completely out of character. Especially considering how much the mere suggestion of limiting PvP/competitive multiplayer to 6v6 max rather than 8v8 is unprecedented for a Bungie FPS.
Relevant info: Starts about 6:10ish into video in link.
Interview transcribed by myself in spoiler:
[Stuff before and after mention of fireteam size (for PvP at least) and voice chat included for context. My emphasis in bold, Bakken's in italics, Interviewer's speech in all-italics and my footnotes/notes in brackets like this.]
Splitscreen? Are you guys talking about supporting that?
I don't know if we're talking about that yet... ...One of the things that we're doing for the first time ever in Destiny we're taking a different approach to- to voice chat. We know that – not just in multiplayer but in general – when you get into a game with: a. someone that you don't know, or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience, and maybe ruin the game for you forever. So what we're doing is, instead of having that, y'know, whatever that is, one in ten chance, possibility of someone ruining your game, we're effectively saying:
[#1]you only have voice chat to your Fireteam
[#2]and we're doing other things to let you communicate with, with other players
...but it'll be interesting to see how people react to it for sure.
[#3]So that desire to just have communication between smaller teams – does that influence the type of modes that you're building then, does it have–
Sure
it's gotta be, uh, it's gotta have kind of a ripple effect to everything else, right?
It could.
[#4] Um, the interesting thing is how we control how many people are in your Fireteam before you go into these matches – or anything, right –
[#5]and we allow up to six-player teams,
[#6]and so you will be able to go into modes with your entirety of the team filled out with people that you have voice chat to.
[#6]It's just that if you go in with less than the max number, matchmaking will fill it out but you won't have direct chat to them.
[#7]That doesn't mean you won't ever have direct chat to them, so if you wanted to platform-specifically say, "hey, I really wanna talk to this person right now" you could invite them to a platform-specific party chat like on, y'know, Xbox 360, or whatever [sorry couldn't help it], or PS4 has voice chat, so it's easy for you to create those things. We're just trying to, by default, have people be more in a curated experience so they won't– they won't have their night ruined.
[#8]I mean, we're super excited for people to play, in the beta; I can't wait for people to get their hands on this game because I think, y'know we're just getting started here.
[#9]There's a lot– like the coolest thing about Destiny is, like we're putting out the first game but then we have a long time to continually iterate and grow the world, and– and I think it's gonna be a really cool journey.
4 Replies6v6 could very well be the limit... However we could also potentially see 12 v 12, or maybe 6 v 6 v 6. They could also add extra bot players.

I took it to mean that there would be a maximum of 6 players per team. However he could be meaning you can have a maximum of 6 players you can chat with per team, so if you are playing with teams of 6 or less you can chat with your whole team, if you play with more than 6 players you won't be able to talk with everyone (unless you use the console systems). I hope there are more than 6 players per team so I'm going to assume 6 is the max for now then I won't be disappointed.

Titanfall this shit up.

1 ReplyIt makes sense to me. Destiny PvP doesn't appear to have room for vehicle combat. And since standard team size is 3v3 to allow for a perfect blend of classes, it only makes sense that BtB size doubles it.

5 RepliesI hope we are not limited to 6v6. In fact im going to be surprised if they seriously intend to have large 9v9/12v12/etc matches but you can only talk to two other people(your fireteam) the whole time. I want to communicate and make friends in destiny.

Edited by external: 2/9/2014 7:02:29 AMNotes on relevant points in interview:
#1: In a sense this isn't that controversial. We had PTT restrictions for >4v4 playlists initially in Halo 3 after all, and #2: they did relax the restrictions on that later. Besides if there was a button to press to toggle fireteam/all-team chat then you could maybe switch back if this results in performance issues for you, at least by my layman's understanding. But obviously what exactly he means by other things is intentionally vague here, we just know that it's situationally possible. #3: And here we hear that it could have an effect on modes–remember 6v6 playlists and the PTT restrictions being relaxed as an example. Nothing really controversial still, but worth noting. #4: Remember that elsewhere, most notably in PvE, the fireteam was defined as 3 in previous gameplay at least. It may still be, with teams being composed of multiple fireteams. So imagine a 3-man fireteam forming up or meeting up via in-game invites, switching to a team PvP "activity"– I use activity instead of lobby deferring to Bungie's language and the hint of at least the option for a "menu waiting room"-less experience– and linking up with another 3-man fireteam and deciding whether they will communicate with them again via in-game invites/chat toggles... #5: Well, shoot, that "we allow up to six-player teams" certainly seems definitive doesn't it, except he was just talking about fireteams, so which is it? #6: Then he says "your entirety of the team filled out with people you have voice chat to." Your entirety or the entirety? You'd have to really wishfully hang on the intention of his words to argue that he means you have your majority of the team (your six-man fireteam out of a max 8 possible team) rather than the entirety of the team– that is, a team with a max of six players. But it still seems wholly possible that there's 8, so that you could "search" (again, however "seamless activity matching" will work) with up to 2 fireteams, possibly all in voice chat, and pick up two searching solo or one partial fireteam of 2 and choose to invite them. #7: Let's assume just for a moment either two of these three hypotheticals: 1. either 8v8 or –more wishful thinking– 2. 9v9+ are the limits, and in either case 3. he's not referring to teams but rather PvP fireteams in #5. If it's 8v8, then you automatically pick up an extra two players, either solo or in a partial team, every time you search in an 8v8 activity. Now, this number might help partial fire teams pick up new members where two or more partial fireteams are searching and meet one or more solo teammate to invite. However, your buddies over in a third three-man fireteam will have to split to pick up an extra two for your 8-man team. That doesn't seem to promote "stickiness" of parties at all. If it's 9v9+ (wth, might as well entertain all possibilities) that's easy to fill out the PvP activity quickly with players switching from any other activity, but obviously exceeds the limit for party chat on many, if not all, platforms for the foreseeable future. Even if you could just have one Guardian talking to his/herself for the duration, that means either randomly booting one Guardian in the last 3-player fireteam to join the party chat, or if each in the "extra" fireteam have to accept a party chat invite individually, a musical chairs situation. So it's absurd to consider a greater than 8v8 situation. #8 Now this could all just be for the Beta of course #9 If Xone and PS4 can both boast larger than 8 max party chat having more is possible
Final note: one possibility that's been floated by another member elsewhere in the GR forum is the idea that when partying up with more than one other fireteam, the fireteam leaders (this could be of that six-man or three man team) would have comms with the entirety of their own fireteam, while also simultaneously having open comms / an easily in-game toggled channel with the leaders of the other fireteams via party chat. These chat leaders could always be simply the fireteam leader by default, or it could default to one member with say the highest level that has a mic (or some other criteria that's fair) in the event the fireteam leader doesn't. That way even if the players on one team in a given activity exceed the 8-player party chat restriction, by forcing the party chat to be for leader coordination in that scenario, then awkward scenarios are avoided, like one man on a fireteam being the odd man out in chat with his fireteam, or being forced to leave because they want to do a larger activity that is arbitrarily limited to 8 instead of 9 players.
