I personally don't have a ton of hope for Elder Scrolls, they haven't set themselves up very well for longevity as a series. While I prefer the general idea of a fantasy based setting over a apocalyptic future setting, I think Fallout is better positioned in terms of longevity and so I'd be curious to see where they end up taking the series, hopefully in a direction that is more ambitious from a gameplay standpoint.

  • They have already had 5 games released in the series... As far as video games go that's already pretty long!

  • The Elder Scrolls has 5 main entries in the series and an upcoming MMO adaptation spanning over 20 years of the game's life. Pretty long if you ask me...

  • My point stands. Wheras Fallout can simply go to a new location and generate a ton of new and interesting and meaningful content around that location, Elder Scrolls just doesn't feel like it can do the same.

  • So can ES. You have a whole planet to explore; or any other plane of existence.

  • It's really not the same thing, but I'm having trouble putting it into words. I suppose you could say that Fallout is far more humble than Elder Scrolls, and with it's theme of survival in a post apocalyptic world, it can get away with having stories in any old location. It seems though like the Elder Scroll Games have to built around some huge world shaking event that some chosen hero comes to defeat every single time, and from looking at how the series has progressed, they're going to have problems with escalation where each game tries to beat the previous one, but there's going to be a point where that's going to be difficult.

  • Yeah I get what you're saying. In Fallout, it's like the huge world shaking even has already happened, the bombs dropping, so they only need that big event to then base the setting and what not of the games on. They don't have to keep thinking of a big event / reason for there to be all conflict and chaos. Whereas like you said, in the elder scrolls they have to keep thinking of stuff to happen, and there's really only so many times a doomsday or whatever can happen.
