I killed the one where you go down the stairs and he is on the ledge. There is an enemy who tries to ambush you and hides behind some shelfs ...

Most NPCs you free will go to Firelink. When you get to the next area there's a blacksmith who sells you stuff. Buy his boxes, they'll come in handy.
