Halo 3 is not as good as you nostalgia junkies are making it out

Honestly it's like you all completely forgot about all the things bad with Halo 3 and just remember the good. Let me refresh your memory. Cheating ran rampant in that game. Extremely easy to manipulate host connection by reducing upload speed. Halo 3 had the most latency of all the Halo games do to how much information had to be sent over the networks. (Bullet travel time calculations, environment data whenever you would through a grenade at a palate and it would break and send pieces of wood flying) All that data had to be sent to each player making the game HORRIFICALLY unoptimized for online play. Halo 2, Reach, and 4 are much more optimized in latency reduction because they didn't have bullet travel time and they reduced the amount of interactive objects in a map which decreased the amount of data being sent to all the players which GREATLY decreased the latency rate. Ranked playlists are a joke and were not a representation of player skill. And before you say "You're just bk" I have a 50 on two accounts. First the buying and selling of accounts was a pretty huge industry back in the "glory" days of Halo 3 which threw the system off tremendously, I never knew who was a legitimate 50 or who just bought/boosted their account. Derankers.... Every other game one team would get ATLEAST one deranker completely destroying whatever chance that team had at winning. And finally it's just silly that one player can get 30 kills and 5 deaths, have a deranker on his team that loses the game for him and then have his level reduced. /logic fail bungie The list goes on these are only a couple of the problems that plagued Halo 3. *zip*

You didn't actually have fun; when Halo 3 was the "latest" Halo game, you were still only suffering from intellect-crippling nostalgia. In fact, none of you ever played Halo, you just wallowed in self-induced anguish and melancholy so severe that you only had hallucinations that you were playing a Halo game. Shame on you all for ever thinking games are about fun and getting together with friends from around the world. It's not fun if it can't be run through an MLG wringer and used to make fun of casuals! And who needs friends!? People are either future teammates, or they're casual-n00bs who're only there for your t-bagging amusement! GET WITH IT LOSERS!!! /sarcasm

I'd take a skill system with some slight hiccups over nothing at all: at least I can get a general idea 9 times out of 10. Only downside was that it inspired cheating/boosting/deranking. I recognize Halo 3's terrible community and bad netcode, but I find that stuff infinitely less frustrating than having to put up with bloom, armor lock, anti-bleedthrough, custom loadouts (especially plasma grenades/pistols and boltshots), perks, terrible maps, ordnance, intense aim assist, etc...

    • I went back and played a lot of Halo 3 multiplayer before Halo 4 launched and it was as fun as I remember it always being. Sure, there were occasionally people who disrupted the game, but that was pretty few and far between in my experience. Second accounters and derankers were always just bizarre to see, but I typically held my own against them. For me, personally, Halo 3 was the best multiplayer I'd experienced, and it still holds that for me. Different strokes for different folks though.
Cheating ran rampant in that game. Extremely easy to manipulate host connection by reducing upload speed.
Not really. Cheating was actually a lot more prevalent in H2.
Halo 3 had the most latency of all the Halo games
False. H2's was also worse.
Ranked playlists are a joke and were not a representation of player skill. You seem to be exaggerating the problem quite a bit here though. H3's ranking system was still better than H2's ranking system where it was so hard to rank up that everyone just host booted past 40. It was most certainly better than HR and H4's ranking systems which are just dull.
The list goes on these are only a couple of the problems that plagued Halo 3.
So why haven't you mentioned them?

    • As Fridge Gnome puts it, Custom Games, in the end were the heart and soul of Halo 3. Halo 3 was my first ever experience in multiplayer. And since it was, for a time, I was absorbed in everything, and didn't care so much about such things. I was less analyitacle of things and spent more time having fun. But, over time, this changed, and yes, I did see the flaws. And I had my fare share of bad moments with all of them. And then, when I was ready to leave the multiplayer, I played a custom game. And then another, and another, and instantly re-ignited the flame that had gone out, and kept it burning bright for years. The enginuity of mapmakers. The bad maps you had a silly old time on. The gametypes. The maps. The people. The experiences had with everything, was for lack of a better term, perfect. And once you had one single custom games person on your recent players list, you could always find more. This, alongside modded maps, glitches, and other shenanigans including things in the campaign, is what kept the game alive for so long. And, in recent Halo's, this is what went wrong in one regard. There was no place you could go to when MM became too much of a retard-fest. Reach introduced new mechanics into forge, but from that point on, maps and their environment lost some of their wow factor. Coming into a map in Halo 3 that was intricately crafted was like no other. Walking into the same map in Reach was, stunted. Because it was easy to construct. Give an average person a few minutes and they could make the same structure. And the maps had no soul. Halo 3 had Sandbox, Foundry, and others all with their own distinct feel, and pallet. And, maps that were meant for Forge aside, even ones with limited resources proved immensly fun as well. Sandtrap was a huge vehicle convoy map. Avalanche was a dark, stalker map, with a feeling of aloneness that came with it. And there were many others that people used for gametypes, that all had their very own special feel to them. What did you get in Reach? One map. Green, blue, and grey. That was it. They refined things, but at the same time, constricted things as well, losing the little special spark that came along with it's previous incarnation. And Halo 4, although having more Forge maps, and a different pallet then grey, still suffered as a result from the beating the customs community took in Reach. No game is ever perfect. But it's shining little moments like what I stated above that make all the difference.

      • Halo 3 is just as good as I remember it. I have so many good memories in that game. Probably more than any other game I've ever played in my life. Those were the golden years. Get over the technical stuff and have a little fun, man. Life's too short for this kind of stuff.

      • I don't care the game is the reason I got Xbox 360 over ps3.
this was well after 2007 but still the game is amazing and it was definitely worth getting.
• My only problems with Halo 3 were: >Never including the Fuel Rod canon and fire nades in matchmaking (Shishka said it was for technical server-side reasons) >Never including the Anti-Air wraith in multiplayer And the worst... >Second-Accounters. People who would make a second account souly to easily rank up in multiplayer Also, I think Halo 3 isn't old enough to nostalgia over :3

They gave it away for free a few months ago. Even then It was a pass. It's not that it's bad. It's just I've played the hell out of it's campaign and I'd like try other games and new upcoming titles over going back to Halo 3 and 2. I loved Quake Arena also, but I'm not heading back to it either anytime soon.

      • It's not better than 2 or CE, but I still play it today and it's sure as shit a far superior game to Reach and 4. (Regardless of the issues it had in it's prime)

        • lolmad Well, maybe not. I know dick all about technical issues, but I had the most fun I've ever had with a game in the halcyon days of 2007-9. Ish. Now, when I go back, it looks kinda crap and the gunplay isn't as good as H4's, so it doesn't feel as great. Not to mention I'm playing with maybe one friend instead of like a dozen in a crazy customs night. :(

          • I loved Halo 3's default maps. They were the pinnacle of Halo map creation and were the best launch maps ever. Let us not forget these incredible and amazing maps that everyone loved: Construct Epitaph Snowbound Narrows Isolation I hope all of those maps return as a future DLC. Nothing compares to their true greatness.
