They are a democracy now but people still seem to have this fear of Russia and the media often portrays them as the bad guys. They are also not even in the top 5 economies and though their military may be pretty advanced there are many other countries with better armies.

Their head of state is ex-KGB. From a time when deterrence was the only thing stopping nuclear war. A man who valued his reputation over the lives of a submarine crew. A man who controls the worlds biggest and most resourceful country.

There aren't many countries with stronger army than Russia. And they are still controlling territories they occupied in WWII.

Edited by PeiperSpinsMeat: 1/2/2014 4:39:12 PMProbably because Russia has recently taken a more defiant stand to the US foreign policy and their economic/political positions are rising. And for its economic size, Russia has very ambitious goals for their foreign policy. They're even trying to form a customs union which many see as a revival of a Russian-dominated USSR.
-
While I would never call Russia a democracy as long as Putin is in charge, the reason why people regard Russia as some enemy is due to Cold War nostalgia and the fact that US and Russian foreign policy still tends to bump heads with one another.
