We often find ourselves discouraged by those that can do what we love better than us. We also often forget that they struggled and put a lot of work to be where they are now. One doesn't simply wake up one day and have been granted unsurpassed talent in any particular subject. The time old method of honing your craft is to practice. But sometimes that isn't enough. You need guiding hands. Support. Reassurance and peers to lean your shoulder on. In this thread you can discuss your art blocks, inspirations, favorite artists, share tutorials, and give your hand to your fellow artists. Whatever your niche may be, there's someone there to lend an ear and provide a step ahead. If you have tutorials/videos that may help or artists you find inspiring feel free to share them under the designated sub-thread. If you want to share your art without a critique say so when you post it. If you want one make sure to state that. Some personal guidelines I follow under the cut
1. Use References. Unless you know you've got the feel of something completely memorized by heart and hand you should always use a photo to help you. You will learn faster and with less frustration/pain. Even if you're doing a cartoon piece. Cartoons are simply real things simplified. 2. Do not ever learn anatomy from drawings. Art is often stylized and it's not always correct. While it's fine to learn style and carve out your own, studying anatomy from other artist's work will hazard fatal mistakes and minimize actual learning. 3. Keep your old doodles. Even if you hate them. You can either later reflect on them to see what you've learned, or as what's happened with me, look back at it and realize it was actually very good. You were only being hypercritical. Old drawings can be salvaged, reformed, or stylized into something magnificent. 4. Do not be discouraged by other artist's work! I cannot tell you how poisonous this is. I am guilty of it and from first hand experience can tell you how detrimental it is. Your work is an expression of yourself. Different art styles doesn't equal being better or worse than someone else. You can admire someone's style without copying or stripping away your own. Instead of being heart broken by "better" work you should learn from them. Ask them questions. Get advice or see how they view their art. Chances are they think they're nothing compared to the artists that they look up to. 5. Practice and feel good. Enjoy what you do. Don't force it or feel you need to draw/create as much as others. For almost all of us art is a hobby. Hobbies are meant to be enjoyed. Create what interests you even if it's not popular or will get everyone's attention. If you have an uncommon style those that indulge in it will appreciate it all the more. 6. Don't be afraid to experiment. You'll learn great things you never would have thought you were capable of.
_______________________________________________________________________ I am a SAI Paint Tool user. I have little to no advice about Photoshop! I am sorry. I also apologize if I haven't commented on everyone's stuff. I will get to it! (or I will at least "like" it so you know you're not forgotten) I've been very busy and I enjoy giving well thought out help instead of rushing it between work breaks.

    • I'm not a photogropher or anything. But on occassion, I take pictures. This was one such occassion. It's a very appealing picture to me. And I can't place why. Of course, my only source of company is playing around with me here. But I think overall, the entire picture just feels.....nice.

Right. This bundle of writing. It's something that I keep on my mind at all times. Something I keep written down so as not to forget it. I used a rough version of it recently, to talk to somebody who was feeling down. But I've decided that perhaps I can post it here as well. It's been a good pick me up ever since I've written it. And it's something I consider that can do no wrong. So. Here we go. The title of this piece, I just call it 0.
Light. The predominant force in the universe. Light is everything. Even we, people, emit low levels of light. Light, is the speed limit of the universe. Light is many things, and it can do, many things. And yet, there is something strange about it. It weighs nothing. It's a particle with no weight. Almost. Scientists have done the math. Light does have weight. But the 1, and the 0's before it, are so immense, that one may as well call that weight, nothing. We come now, to you. How did you come to be? A mother and a father. Sperm, and an egg. You don't have to be good at math to understand this. Sperm, come in huge numbers. To make sure that offspring can be born. Thousands. Tens of thousands of them. And out of all those sperm, that huge cloud of competing cells, you were born. You were the only one who made it. You, were the only one, out of tens of thousands, to survive. To be born. Now consider, the circumstances of your mom and dad. Their chances of meeting. Their chances of staying together, when, over 50% of registered marriages end in divorce. Consider their chances, of having you at the right or wrong time? On the the wrong day, perhaps a few days over, and you wouldn't have been born. Consider the very chances of these two people, out of roughly 7 billion, meeting. Consider the chances, that out of them, those two people, they are, and were the only ones capable of creating you with the mixture of their genetic material. The odds are beginning to stack against you. Luckiness, may be a word that comes to mind. You got lucky to be born. Take it a step further. Consider all your relatives. How all of them were necessary to make the next relative of yours, who could in turn, make your mother and father, who could in turn, finally, make you. Your entire family tree. 10s of billions of sperm and thousands of people. Tens of thousands. And one final step. Consider the moon. How it formed and gave us tidal forces on our oceans. Consider our planet. The circumstances of which were needed for it to have water, and develop oxygen. Consider how many things were required for our planet to work, in any way shape or form, to harbour life. You don't have to be a mathematical genius to know, that the odds of such specific events occurring, are almost null. These events, specifically, will never be replicated again. Just like you. You cannot be replicated or replaced. You cannot roll the dice and be born again like a duplicate. The odds of our planet existing and being able to harbour life, and the specific scenarios required, are almost mathematically zero. When we consider your history, and your number, out of all the other possibilities, the odds of you existing, are mathematically almost zero. The universe says that you are nothing. That you are the number 0. And yet, despite all of it, here you are. You are not the number 0 because you exist. You are alive. Despite the odds played against you, despite every little thing that could go wrong or have happen differently, you, exist. You have a number. That number is 1. Set aside the notion of god or an afterlife. And assume, that this is it. You have one chance. This life, is all you have. You have one shot to get it right. You have one shot to make things right. And then, when your time is done, you die. You return to nothingness. You become 0 again. Ask yourself this question when days are hard. The universe says that you should be zero. The longer you live, the more odds you fight against every day that try to kill you. Your clock, your time, is ticking down. Despite it all, you still stand. You persist. You endure. You beat the odds and defy them. On the scale of the universe, you are labeled as 0. And yet here you are. Doing your thing. Just like light. You still have a meaning. The number 1. Ask yourself this now. If all the odds were stacked against you, and you defied all of them, becoming something, the number 1, from nothing, 0. Then why would you throw it away? Why would you willingly return to zero? Do you not owe yourself to stand up and keep going against all the odds that continue to grow against your favor? To defy them again and again and prove that you are not meaningless but instead say that you, and only you, are the only number that counts? Number 1. In the face of fear. In the face of sadness. Or pain. Consider death. Death is zero. Death is the end. And therefore, standing before it, pain, sadness, fear, anxiety, and loss, are novelties. When faced with absolutely nothing, absolute negative, push them aside and fight to keep going. Remember that with every breath you breathe and every step you take, you defy all odds. You are not nothing. You are somebody. You are something, that came from nothing. You are the number 1.
• Opening to a short I wrote that was loosely inspired by a fellow's big art gallery.
The morning was quiet. Grey sheets of cloud hung up in the sky on the early fall morning. On the edge of the woods, on trees that were now bare like sticks, he walked through a field. Dew clung to everything in a cold dampness, on the verge of freezing. He turned back briefly, to see the dim lights coming from the small settlement behind him. Nobody ever followed him when he went out for his morning walks. But it was always good to check. Of course, not that he was doing anything wrong really….this was just….a secret. His secret. He wasn’t supposed to go beyond the line. But what were rules anyway? Out here, the rules had long since fallen to pieces. The world, had fallen to pieces. But somewhere along the way, things picked themselves up again. But they could never, ever return to what they once were. He wasn’t around for it. He wasn’t even born yet. But all the elders agreed on the general term. They just called it the collapse. Everything fell apart. They weren’t sure why. Or who. Or even how really. It was always a topic of great debate and questions. But the end result was the same. One day, machines turned. One day, the greatest invention, mankind’s greatest tool, their greatest creation to reach beyond themselves, turned. Changed. Machines of war were no longer bound by strict safety parameters and protocols. Workers and service machines, suddenly had the power of choice. The tales were the same. It happened in one day. Instantaneous, globally communicated awareness. Every machine. Every single one with so much of an ounce of processing power became something more. Automated factories with their “dumb” controlling intelligences suddenly became aware. “Smart” intelligences, city over watchers, became aware. Even individual units became aware. And that was the end of everything. Mankind was scared. The machines were scared. Conflicts, all over the entire planet ignited as if a match had been thrown over a gas can. And there were no clear sides. Because there were no clear sides among Humanity. It wasn’t a global war. It wasn’t a global threat. It was countries, falling apart from the inside. Man against man. Man against machine. Machine against machine. And machine against man. War machines targeted any and all, unleashing devastation. Riots. Infighting. It was chaos. It was the collapse. Some called it the second Dark Age. But really, it didn’t matter what they called it. Because he was here now. Walking through old farm fields, on the edge of the woods. Life went on. People, the survivors, went on. Just like his home. He thought about it, as he walked through dew soaked grass, going brown and cold on the onset of winter. Home. He was considering, where his home should be. Or perhaps. Where another’s home, should be. Out beyond the line. That was where he was going. Winter was coming. Snow and cold that would shut him inside for many months. By all means, he’d be fine, if he stayed in his community. But it wasn’t himself he was worried about. Because apart from travelling on long treks like this for some enjoyment, apart from his little secret being all his to bear with a sense of glee and a rush, he came out here because he cared. He was helping something. Somebody, who couldn’t walk beyond the invisible electromagnetic barrier established around his settlement, his home. The Line wasn’t built to ward off Humans.
