Your opinion on Death Note's Ending *Spoilers inside*

I'm interested to see who would prefer which ending and why, one is the ending of the show and the other is the theoretical 'dream' one, which was what Light wanted. Please post which ending and whether you supported Light or not. Ending Choice 1. Light gets caught/killed. 2. Light defeats the police/CIA/Children and succeeds in taking over the earth and wiping out those who commit crimes. Support Choice 1. Light was a monster, I wanted to see him lose. 2. Light was an anti-hero, he had good intentions but lost his way 3. Light was a hero, I wanted to see him win. I need your answers because reasons.

  • Light gets caught/killed. I wanted Light to win, but he wasn't a hero. He wasn't really an anti-hero, either. By his death he was just a villain who wanted to become God. I just thought watching his quest for Godhood was entertaining, and though I wanted him to win, I don't think him winning would make a very good ending. Anyway, for personal thoughts. I liked L's death. Even now I remember saying "oh shit" when the heart attack sound triggered. I couldn't believe it happened, and I was blown away. Did the show get worse after L died? Sure. Would I ever want it to have went differently? No. L dying was amazing. Near and Mello were shitty characters. Even so, I don't think the ending was that bad. The last cour in general was pretty shitty, but the ending still had me on the edge of my seat. I'm not going to lie; my heart was pounding so hard at the second last episode. Even though I knew Light was going to lose, part of me wanted him to win, and the suspense was insane. So even though the cour was bad, the fact that the ending had me in such a state is enough to make me think it was good. I don't even think Death Note was that great of an anime, but it certainly is good for what it is. Sure they could have improved the last cour a bit and maybe make Near a better character, but the ending was perfect in my eyes.

I like the ending, it fits the show's context though something a pit more graceful than being shot would have been better. I don't know, like the last guy in the warehouse gets power hungry and writes everyone's name down killing all of them (This assumes the notes were not swapped). And this would also make a sequel possible. (Then again the show might not recover after L).

    1. 2. Meh wasn't really about supporting Light or not. I feel him getting caught/killed fits the story better. (but you're probably looking at it from a psychological point of view rather than narrative) Loved the show, but Burrito is right that the series drops off after L's death. Would have preferred L defeating Light.

    • I liked the ending of the second movie, and I think the series should have ended like that. After L died, the anime/manga got much worse. Near was a terrible character by comparison so I would really have preferred him to not be there at all.

      • Despite substantial evidence to the contrary, Death Note ended with L's death.

        • Light should have won, only because of how bad N and the other one were as characters and detectives.

          • I was always against Light. I agree with N, he was just an arrogant child who grew delusional with power.

            • It should have ended when L dies, seriously it just dragged on for 12 more episodes after his death. The only good thing about season 2 was Near.
