Good point, can I hand my Social Security number and Driver's License to you as well?
More serious and not sarcastic reply, not all members have Phone Numbers even in this day and age, a verification system isn't a terrible idea, but having to give over more information just to make our standard experience better is giving too much for too little.

Obviously you wouldn't want to give over very sensitive information... I went with phone numbers because people give those to businesses all the time, it's something most people have, and most people only have one. Bungie would have to find a piece of information that is unique enough to verify the account, but not personal enough that people wouldn't want to give it up. Cell numbers seem ideal. Also, Cell numbers are already used by sites to verify identities... If I try to log into my xbox live account from a new machine, I get a text message from Microsoft with a code that I have to enter into the site... so not only could it act as a verification, but as an added layer of security.
but having to give over more information just to make our standard experience better is giving too much for too little
I disagree. The only other option is removing features from the site that revolve around "popular opinion", or just accepting that alts will always have more power. If there's no way to distinguish an alt from a real person, we lose functional site features, and I'd happily provide my cell number to fix it.
