480p HDTV -- Screen Cutoff Problem!!!

So, I waited. Midnight Madness. I was there. Number 69. Sweet. Can't wait. Friends calling me from all over Los Angeles..."Did you get it yet!? What number are they on!?" Halo 2 in hand, went and got some java at Insomniac on Beverly Blvd. Sweet. Getting ready for a long night. I prepped everything when I got home. BoSox rally cap -- check. Coffee sweetened -- check. Huge mug of water -- check. Surround sound system, TV, remotes all nearby -- check. Open box, insert game -- check. 480p. Check. Press Start, make profile, begin Campaign -- check. WTF!? Far left and far right of the screen...it's IMMEDIATELY obvious that part of my screen is getting cut off. My radar isn't fully visible. My grenade display doesn't show how many of the first grenade type I have. Checkpoint...? Nope. "heckpoint..." Switch TV modes...Expand. Nope. Stretched. Nope. Narrow. WORSE. Back to Standard. WTF!? SHUT OFF THE GAME. Can't believe I turned the game off. Time to check back at the Dashboard/Console controls of the XBox, change my video settings from Widescreen to something else. Let's try Letterbox. Re-load Halo 2. Same problem!? No, no, say it's not so...no! Back to XBox Dashboard/Console controls...Regular (aka 4:3, aka crappy) TV...maybe that'll work. Re-load Halo 2. Same problem. So, I ask everyone here...I ask the folks at Bungie, WTF is going on!? I checked screenshots all over the web, just to make 100% sure that I was missing a portion of the screen...I'd say I'm losing 10%. I've been over to GameFaqs to see if I'm alone on this. I'M NOT. And there will be more...those of us with 480p HDTVs...some Widescreen, others not...will even the non-WS folks have trouble? Who knows. But the real question is: why on earth is this happening? what is the workaround!? Is there one? I'm at wits end trying to get the full display to come alive in Halo 2, and I'll be VERY sorely disappointed if this isn't resolved. Hell, even the original HALO looks fine...stretched out a bit, maybe, but the full display is visible. (sigh) -Kylearan

 • I have a general question about widescreen. If it was working correctly for Halo 2, would I be able to see additional information vs 3:4. I know when I watch movies, I can actually see more of the original scene. Is widescreen for gaming going to show more of the viewable landscape?

 • Covenant Titan, so because we bought HDTVs, we "got what is coming too us." Way to troll. [Edited on 11/11/2004 10:43:39 AM]

 • I own the latest Sony 42" widescreen LCD rear projection and I have this problem. TV does not autodetect into widescreen, I have to manually set to full and the image is distorted in full mode (oval reticle, etc...). so BUMPITY BUMP BUMP

 • Same problem with information cut off. 1st gen Xbox with no mods and no Live capability. Toshiba 65H82 16:9 set to widescreen Xbox in widescreen 480p=yes, 720p=no, 1080i=yes I adjusted my overscan from 5% down to 3% to make the game playable in 480p but do not consider it a fix. Yes, I know what I'm doing in the service menu. [Edited on 11/11/2004 10:02:59 AM]

 • I wonder why they don't have an "adjust screen" area....I've seen this on many games before. Off the topic, I'm 29 year old guy, and not to be a hater, (and keep in mind, they are not haters, and wanted to really like this game) but every friend I've got is saying the same basic thing: "What the heck has Bungie been doing for the last 3 yrs?" My inital review of Halo 2 - 8.5 out of 10. Those IGN editors who gave it that incredible video review are wrong. My review of Halo 2 with this screen issue - 3.0 out of 10. Thats. my .000000002 cents... BUMP BUMP [Edited on 11/11/2004 9:44:36 AM]

 •
Posted by: Neutron1998 I noticed this too. My TV (Sony Wega 30" Widescreen CRT) always defaults to Wide Zoom for some reason. It cuts off the bottom and top a little. When I first popped the game in I thought it was messed up. I see now from all these posts I'm not alone. The fix I had for my situation was to change my TV's screen setting in the display menu from W. Zoom to Full. Now everything looks normal in 16:9 format in Halo 2. I just hate that I have to do this everytime I start Halo 2.
Hello Neutron1998 Just a suggestion, as I'm not familiar with that particular Sony TV, but mine has a setting in the menu for the "default" settings for various forms of input. Check to see what it has set for each mode (Widescreen and normal -- I can't remember exactly what it's called, but there's something in there that should be quite obvious when you're in the menu) and change it to "Full" from Wide Zoom. Hope that helps.

 • Are you using Microsoft's HD AV pack, or the Monster brand of component cables? I use Monster, and on my 32" Sony Wega HDTV (4:3 ratio) the picture is perfect, whether on 'Normal' or 'Widescreen' mode. Of course, this could be because it's a newer model television, but it's just an idea.

 • I too have noticed the broblem although I would say the top is more cut off than the left side. I have the following setup: Toshiba Cinema Series 57hx83 (16x9) FULL setting (RP CRT TV) Dell 1700 LCD TV XBOX Rev 1 (bought on DAY 1), no mods, MS HD pack, Monster component cables set widescreen wiht all HD modes, 480p, 720p and 1080i, turned on Switched through Yamaha RX-Z1 CE Labs Componet Video distibution box that also connects to both the Toshiba and Dell I usually only have the Toshiba on as the Dell LCD at my bar in another part of the room. After noticing the problem originally on 11/9 and reading the forums last night I tried with both TVs on. Result: Toshiba RPTV has the problem, Dell LCD displays PERFECTLY, with no cutoffs. Conclusion: (as reached by others here) is that most if not all fixed pixel displays (LCD, DLP, Plasma) do not appear to have the problem because they display the entire game signal. All CRT TVs (Rear Projection and Direct view) could/will exhibit the problem to some extent depending on the calibration of the set, specifically the overscan. Fix: Bungie must release a patch that adusts the positing of the HUD inward some amount. Since they cannot account for every type and setting of TV out there they will have to derive some "best setting" based on testing some statistical amount of TVs believed affected to ensure 90something% coverage. Making the actual change should be trivial however the proper amount of testing (WHICH OBVIOUSLY WASN'T DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!) is what will take some time. Another approach to the fix might be adjsut the HUD positioning a certain % depending on the detected settings of the Xbox (since there is no way for the Xbox or the game to know about the TV). I wouldn't expect a fix overnight. Until then I'll have to sit at my bar and play on my 17" LCD TV instead of the big screen. (DAMN, I didn't need another excuse to drink....) HAns

 • 1) What are the make (brand) and model of your television? 2) Is your TV set to display in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio? 3) Is your Xbox set to display in 480p, 720p, and/or 1080i? 4) Is your Xbox set to display in Normal, Widescreen, or Letterbox? 1) 34" Sony XBR800 2) 16:9 3) 480p, 720p, 1080i all set to yes 4) Widescreen Issue will go away when I switch to 480i, all other settings the same. As expected, no issue on my Panasonic AE700 projector. __________________________________________ You said it, Covenant_Titan. How dare we spend a lot of money on high end audio and video equiptment! We're just setting ourselves up for disaster. If only I would have stayed with my old 27" analog TV! Oh how much happier I'd be! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play some Halo 2 on my six foot wide screen now! Bwaaahaaa haa haa!! [Edited on 11/11/2004 8:52:47 AM]

 •
Posted by: XFreelancer LCD users are affected. I have a Sony Grand Wega LCD and it does not natively render Halo 2 in 16:9...it stretches 4:3 instead.
Really? I too have a Sony Grand Wega LCD (42") and I have true 16:9 being rendered by my xbox. The reason that I know this is all objects that are to be round are truely round on the screen. Which is not the case in other FPS, such as Rainbow Six 3 - If I choose "full" mode on that game, the targeting circle on the HUD is more like an oval. I hate to sound like I'm insulting your intelligence, that's not my intention, but since mine seems to be functioning correctly, what Hi-Def box are you using out of the xbox and are you sure you have all your settings config'd correctly in your xbox dashboard?

 • hitachie 51" ultravision hdtv here Supports 480p 1080i native launch day xbox, hdav pack losing about 1/2" on each side only, but still annoying (running 16:9) When I flip to 4:3, it look fine, but then you get the grey bars on the sides as filler. fyi - this happened in Mortal Kombat 2 as well (no fix) [Edited on 11/11/2004 8:58:03 AM]

 • Also, my Xbox is the original version and does not have a progressive scan option. Maybe turning that off will help some of you? My DVD player is progressive scan and the tv automatically sets the screen size, but my Xbox does not. Is this due to not having the progressive scan option? Also, am I not getting as good a picture as I should because of that?

 • Same problem here. 480p in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspects causes the HUD to be 'cut off'. 480i for both modes seems fine, save for the fact that it looks like a$$ on a HDTV. Also, of course, the 'complimentary' but not related issue of no true widescreen HUD. I'm sorry, but stretching a 4:3 HUD over a 16:9 image does not qualify as 'true widescreen support' to me... - Toshiba 26HF84 widescreen TV - Newer Xbox (bought this year) - Official Xbox HD pack and cables - Latest Xbox Live updates (via Fable disc)

 • Sorry if this is a double post, but it looks like I messed something up.
Posted by: DiamondWeapon the HUD should have an opacity setting
Great idea! Although I am not experiencing this problem (sorry to all of you that are), I have not been logging much Halo 2 time on my HDTV in fear of burn in, instead I've been playing on a 27" trinitron. Everyone should include this suggestion in your emails to Bungie, as it will benefit us all.

What Hi-Def pack are you using? I'm sad to read all of the issues that my fellow gamers are having with this, and I do hope that Bungie comes out with a fix soon.

 • In multiplayer, It keeps telling me someone named "ou" keeps killing and being killed. Like the game says "ou killed ". It must be some sort of a glitch, because I'd rather see who I kill and killed. But it's hilarious because this ou person is really bad. They get killed and commit suicide all the time. He should just stick with something like "Barbie's horse Adventure" or some Mary Kate & Ashley game. I feel bad for the idiot. Poor ou. [Edited on 11/11/2004 8:29:40 AM]

 • FYI- This topis was posted on avsforum.com as well. I bought a syntax 30" LCD HDTV-ready screen. Without rubbing it in, H2 looks awesome! Initially, I setup the dashboard for all settings 480/720/1080 and then loaded H2. The set is new (albeit not without some issues out of the box..like an annoying hum) and I am using the Microsoft HiDef Connector (Component and audio). My Xbox is one of the 1st generation. No mods. Running Xbox LIVE. Did download some update for Halo 2 lastnight. That's about it. Good luck! Sorry this is happening and hope there is a solution...soon. It does look sweet!

 •
Posted by: Frankie Hey guys, we ARE going to address this, hopefully today. We're investigating as we speak. Seems at the moment to affect certain TVs, but we'll report as soon as we have an explanation.
Thanks guys, It's awesome when developers actuallly look at their fourms. ...funny that the developers that I deal with in the business world don't do the same...
