Well, I rolled across this interesting article that made me wonder, if we will not be needing our own PS Eye for voice commands on the PS4, does that basically render the software useless? Assuming that's all it would generally be used for, that is unless it's motion capture turns out to be superb. Assuming it won't, will the PS4's Eye be of any need to any PS4 user at all?

Edited by Obsric: 10/28/2013 1:15:18 AMThe PS4eye was also meant to be able to do facial recognition login. Yet with only two weeks to launch, Sony has not released any concrete details on either of these systems. No official press releases on facial or voice recognition let alone footage of the systems actually working, as well as the staged environment in order to limit what's able to be reported on at release, should be ringing alarm bells in people heads...

Another example of Sony 'cutting out the crap' Having the console sold cheaper without gear alot of people won't use (even if just for voice control) means more sales/increased turnover, better marketing and catering better and realistically to your target market. Good news.

The nice thing about Microsoft's blundering ad campaign is that they tell you everything about their console. Both the good and the bad. Sony just says "gamers!" and occasionally mentions something about what their console does.

This is what I was expecting the next Xbox to do before it was announced.

Basically they are using it like the Smart TV's, you get a little thing you speak into for voice commands since built in microphones are patented by Microsoft for the Kinect

2 RepliesWell, I guess, Ive preordered the ps4 and don't really want it. So I guess, it's kind of the same as the kinect. Sucks that ms is selling with the console because I'd say about 30% of people who get the Xbox one won't use the kinect, and that's a big number.

1 ReplyIt's just better for me. You don't need a camera for voice control.

9 RepliesThat's pretty awesome! I hope it works with the BF4 Commo Rose, but it won't be that bad if it doesn't.

2 RepliesLet me see, now... Okay, so basically the Xbox One is employing the Kinect 2 to deploy voice commands, whereas the PS4 is deploying a headset as well as the PS Eye to make voice commands meaning you won't need the PS Eye. The Xbox One won't have this for the headset but this is okay because unlike the PS4, bundles without the Kinect 2 aren't available unlike bundles with the PS4 and PS Eye... Having gotten that out of the way, essentially the PS Eye isn't necessary for voice commands but it helps if you lost your headset or something. That's neat but it doesn't render the PS Eye useless because you need to plug in your headset and speak into it to do voice commands if you don't have a PS Eye which is obviously markedly more difficult than pressing one button to do something and is only useful when you're already using your headset to communicate with others, hence the reason why Sony hasn't made a big deal of it unlike Microsoft and their Kinect 2. The PS Eye won't bundle with the PS4 hence why it's important to have voice commands. However with the PS Eye you won't need to plug in your headset to use voice commands because it's separate from the console but that it's already plugged in. Sweet! If you're playing without your mic because you're not talking to anybody... Also you need the PS Eye for hand gestures (useful if you're a mute) and for motion sensing games (helpful if you're a casual or a weird hybrid person). So no the PS Eye isn't useless at all it's just markedly less useful than the Kinect 2. In this instance this I a good thing because it takes away functionality from the PS Eye which is important because it won't bundle with the PS4 always, unlike the Kinect 2 with the Xbox One which will... So the Kinect 2 is better but it's compulsory unlike the PS Eye. Why get a PS4 if you're gonna get a PS Eye though? You might as well get an Xbox One with the bundled, superior, Kinect 2.

1 ReplyI won't be using voice commands either way, but knowing that the option is there without having to pay an additional $60 is nice.

9 RepliesUnfortunately I don't have a ton of faith in Sony recognition software that magically appeared as a feature in the last 5-6 months.

Wow, that's funny. Well I probably won't even use voice commands anyway.

Wow that's cool
