Does anyone know the average Halo 3 skill level?

I tried looking around to see if it said anywhere, but I couldn't find anything. If no one knows the actual average, what would you guess?

 •
Posted by: MrMerc Man Sir I really meant a guesstimate, but OK.
Well if you want a guesstimate, then I would have to say 95 percentile or more. Based on what I have heard about how stiff the competition is around there, the cream of the crop is definitely 47+ But, it is only a guesstimate, and I could be 100% wrong. That is why I like to have data to back up my claims.

 •
Posted by: MrMerc Man Sir So what would you consider the percentile of 47s+?
it is impossible to tell without all of the stats.

 • With statistics applied, it mu = 25 Right in the center, 68 % of the ranks within that range.

 • You need to lessen the bell curve at the ends of the sprctrum. Half of the clowns I see at levels 46+ are completely terrible. I think getting a 50 should be a huge accomplishment only achieved by a very few.

Let the logic and reasoning of his post be what makes it true or not. You can disagree with a bungie employee; however, most of the time you will be wrong. [Edited on 12.04.2007 11:08 AM PST]

 • its weird. no matter what halo im playing (2 or 3) ive always gotten stuck somewhere around 30 depending on the playlist. in lone wolves though i got to lvl 40 relatively easy, and now its alot tougher to gain lvls.

 • This is true. Ideally it will be 25 in each playlist, but as long as new players keep entering a playlist, it will tend to be lower.
Posted by: Strike Force 25 ideally would be the average, Trueskill makes everyone in the form of a bell curve, which would peak at 25 and be small on the low and high end. However, because there will always be new players coming to the game, the low end of the bell will be higher than the high end of the curve, which means that if you were to take the average of all the players, it would be less than 25.
• It's impossible to guess what the actual mean skill is. Using the in-game real-time graphs, the bulk of the players seem to be in the 12-15 range for TS and LW playlists and 15-18 for DT. I've checked the graphs on a number of different days and times. Now, this does not prove what the average skill is but it does give an idea that the majority of players seem to be at the low end. This is kind of expected IF there is a lot of new players joining MM every day. Once the new players stop, the average should rise. Also, I am not sure where the peak of the normal distribution is. It could be at 25 or it could be set at 20 to make the higher levels harder to achieve.

 • it depends on what playlist you're talking about.

 •
Posted by: MrMerc Man Sir I see what he's saying, but how come the graphs that we can pull up in the pregame lobby aren't exactly bell curves? And from what I've seen, the peaks aren't necessarily at 25. You cannot simply take the average of 1 - 50. Also, I forgot what the term is called in statistics, but there is a percentage in the beginning of the curve and the end of the curve that isn't reliable data and therefor isn't used.
because those graphs only account for who is playing that exact playlist at that exact point in time. It has nothing to do with everyone's maximum skill across all of the playlists. For the most part, those graphs in game mean nothing for what the highest skill of the total population. I would be willing to bet that it shows mostly lower level players because they are trying to get to a higher level, and there are less higher leveled players because they don't want to lose their rank. Ideally-Ideally the skill level distributed across the ranks would hit a peak at level 25. It is just like the standardized tests that I used to have to take like every year in grade school so long ago... they use percentiles, and the average percentile is at 50...Halo 3's skill levels are basically a percentile but on a scale of 1-50 instead of 1-99. The system tries to make the peak be at the middle of the levels, but realistically this can never happen because there will always be new players coming in (rasing the low end).

 • So as time progresses we can expect more bell curve resemblances and the average to finally reach 25? Man, 25 is pretty BK.

 • at the end of each curve is 2.5 % of the data. Its two standard deviations away from the mean. Im not simply taking the average of one - fifty. Educate yourself about the skill system by reading the stickies. The reason the graphs arent perfect bell curves yet, is b/c the system doesnt have enough data yet. and it will never be a perfect bell curve, per say, b/c as strike force said, new players will always be entering the data set, so that throws off the curve slightly at the low end. • I'd say early thirties to be safe. You might be able to see what the average H3 level is when you go to a Team Slayer playlist and press X to pull up that graph. Which reminds me that it'd be nice if Bungie could tell us the average level in general and the average level of each playlist.

 • I thought I was about average and my skill level is 37 atm and should top off at about 40-45 depending on how well I do the next couple of days in lonewolves.
