I don't know what it's like in other countries, but here in the United Kingdom our televisions get absolutely raped by network providers flopping their huge wangs around saying "Buy our superfast broadband!"
But it's a waste of time. They talk about how much faster it is than other providers and bang on about how they are the absolute epitome of internet providing but they don't offer superfast broadband. They only offer it in certain areas and then only talk about the statistics of those certain areas. The single way a company should be able to claim to have the fastest broadband if they offer it nation wide and then work out the average speed.
Advertisement in general is just one giant clusterfuck. Especially since corporations are legally allowed to twist the truth and lie.

My internet sucks

2 RepliesHooray for having an internet provider that doesn't lie to you about internet speeds! :D
-
Canadian have faster internet than americans. Fact. We also have higher fees though.

You have to remember that there is only one rule for Advertising: You must convince someone that something is new. I you can do that, everything else falls into place.

Here in Australia we were going to get the National Broadband Network or NBN for short, it was basically high speed internet using fiber optic lines instead of copper wires. They planned for it to be nationwide and to finish in 2022. I was going to get it in 2016, and my friend who doesn't have any internet lines so he has to use portable WI-FI. He was going to get it and i got delayed 7 months. But since we got a new Prime Minister earlier this year he cancelled the NBN, but the people who had a contract to get it still get it. So yea I'm stuck with copper or fiber i don't know

We were promised a speed of 7mbs, but we get 5... My area can't very anything more than a 7 and it's a -blam!-ing city.

1 ReplyDo you even know what rhetoric is? It's like the #1 tool used my advertisement.

4 RepliesWelcome to advertising 101. If your product can provide the best or fastest internet at one location, it is indeed the fastest. It's the consumer's fault if they don't do their research enough to know that it may be slower in their region. Internet speed is hardly a consistent thing from one neighborhood to the next, even from the same company. That's universal knowledge to anyone who has dealt with Internet providers over the years. You're fooling yourself if you believe it's going to magically be super-fast in all areas.

9 RepliesEdited by Ad Hoc: 10/18/2013 7:46:12 PMTime Warner does the same thing here in the US. "OUR INTERNET IS MEGA FAST. YOUR COMPUTER WILL LITERALLY BE ABLE TO OUTRUN A LIGHTNING BOLT" Okay, they never actually said that, but it's the basic idea. They advertise 8Mb/s DL, but I really only get like 2. Even 8 is kind of shit though. That's what happens when you live in Maine.
Especially since corporations are legally allowed to twist the truth and lie.
Basically, yeah. The courts have fallen for the 'No True Scotsman' fallacy, so there's basically no end to this.

It's the same way here. Price fixing and bullshit speeds abound.
-
My connection speed only goes as fast as my network card allows, 57Mb/s I'm paying for 150Mb/s tho.
-
Op is fag.
-
Well they sure are truthful about slow connection. I haven't gotten anything over 200 kb/s

Try living in Canada.

It depends on where you live too!

12 RepliesCompanies aren't allowed to lie. That's false advertising. What you're referring to is puffery, which is a claim based solely on opinion to place one thing over another, e.g. "Pizza King has the best pizza in Chicago!" Since there isn't one specific qualifying factor to determine which internet provider is actually better, or even if there is, they can still claim to be "The Best," since they aren't specific as to the details or variable of their claim.

Sounds like South Park with the cable companies
-
Well yeah, that's what happens when you live in a world where 9.9/10 IPs communicate with each other on how to control the market, or are just assholes trying to squeeze you of every dollar/pound instead of pushing for progress.
-
You call the ISP and ask them what the average/ estimated speed for your area is. It all depends on the line speed the isp provides and how far you are from the exchange. If youre living in the middle of nowhere and the nearest exchange is 20km away, dont expect anything fast.
-
Look up Windstream and its reviews. They promise to fix or give you high speed Internet, but they give you 3mbs on a good day and a .23 mbs download on the average day during peak hours. They also delay most of their repairs for as long as possible since they have a monopoly in rural areas.

2 RepliesYou're just jealous of the Plusnet band.

Hey it could be worse, Australia's overall internet is so shit we are like a lag switch island to everyone else
