So usually I put in about three to four dollars worth of gas in my car, and my gas light is on most of the time, and I was wondering if that's bad for the car. I save hundreds of dollars this way, but someone said it was bad.

1 ReplyIn colder weather you run the risk of condensation in the fuel tank, which can wreck your fuel pump. Ultimately it's better to fill it up all the way, and then refuel when you're at about a quarter of a tank.

2 RepliesEdited by Cobravert: 10/1/2013 11:00:04 PM1) This in NO way is saving you money except for if it keeps you from driving around unnecessarily, wasting gas. 2) Having the fuel light on is not harming your car. It will however raise your stress level subliminally over time, making you more likely to check and recheck your gas gauge and making you a distracted driver. 3) You can save money on gas buy filling your tank when the cost per gallon is lower. IT may be more money out of pocket at that money, but it will be less money over the course of time. 4) By only putting a few bucks in the tank at a time you are wasting more time and money because you have to make more trips to the gas station. You method is total nonsense. It sounds more like you are short on funds and can not force yourself to part with the cash and just do like I said on #3.

3 RepliesIf you're being serious, then yes it is worse for the car to not fill it up, because all the shitty petrol and dirt from the bottom of the tank gets sucked through the fuel pump.

5 RepliesHow exactly does that save you money?

My father screwed up the fuel pump on his truck by not filling it up enough. (According to the mechanic) he shouldn't have kept it so low all the time because it forces the pump to work harder. However, I know nothing about cars and this may be total BS.

3 RepliesWhat kind of car do you have?

6 RepliesTo everyone in this thread: It will technically save him money because his car will weight less which means better gas mileage. The amount saved could potentially add up to hundreds of dollars as a time frame was not given.

4 RepliesHow in the hell does that save you hundreds of dollars? You would have to go back and put in three-four dollars every other day. Just because it is three or four dollars everytime does not mean it doesn't add up. I usually put in $30-$40 and it lasts me about three to four weeks in my Jeep.

It's not bad, but it certainly isn't good either. My car tends to run better when there's more than a gallons worth in my tank.

Nope.
