Dated Aug 20, 2013. From eurogamer.net:
Do this. Or don't. Your choice. Your risk.
Microsoft has issued a warning to prospective Xbox One owners: don't stand it up vertically!
Do so at your own risk, Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, told GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show.
"We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," he warned.
Then, he clarified: "It wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both."
The Xbox 360 is perfectly happy positioned horizontally as it is vertically, of course. But according to Panello, only 20 per cent position their current-gen Xbox vertically.
"We found, interestingly enough, that 80 per cent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally," he said.
I'm part of the 20 per cent, then. Are you?
So I guess a friendly word of warning. EDIT: For some added perspective: I've lived in three apartments, with three different entertainment centers, and two different TVs in the last six years. So for someone in my shoes, lack of vertical placement isn't a deal-breaker, it's simply an inconvenience and another silly misstep.

Well, that sucks. If i were to get the xboxone I wouldn't even be able to store it on my tv stand....
-
I have never felt comfortable leaving any of my consoles standing vertically. Horizontal master race!

4 RepliesEdited by Winter Soldier: 9/20/2013 7:07:25 PMWhy would you stand your 360 vertically? Its just so awkward putting the disc in the drive.
-
4 RepliesDoes any regular person even put the console vertical?
-
4 RepliesEdited by Vampire Nox: 9/20/2013 6:24:22 PMDon't care. Doesn't change my purchasing choice, I just see this as a mindless way to bitch in lieu of anything with actual substance.

ITT: Vertical haters Vert master race
-
Good thing it won't affect me this time around. In my position my 360 is vertical, only because of my desk and space situation.
-
Never stood it vertically anyways. I was always afraid that with my 360, the disc wasn't properly secured in the tray when it was vertical.
-
Same with the Xbox 360. Nothing new for me.

1 Reply*Has limited space on desk at school.* *Pretty must has to have the console stand vertically.* Yeah I'm going to stand it vertically anyway and probably just install my games so I don't risk destroying them.
-
4 RepliesI don't see this as a problem. Any sane person has their 360 lying horizontal, so I don't see why they'd stand their XB1 vertically.
-
1 ReplyIf you have a entertainment setup with tight space, vertical is your best option. Anyway, sounds like laziness on MS's part.
-
My MW3 disk has a big scratch in it and believe it or not it will only work if my Xbox is vertical
-
Oh my. Well that sucks.
-
Horizontal Master Race. Seriously, it already sounds like a harrier jump jet when there is a disc in, I'm not going to take the risk of it being vertical and shredding up Battlefield D: like it did to Halo 3 for me.

I was not aware of this; thanks for the info. Now that I think about it, for some reason I've had my PS3 horizontal, and 360 vertical. lol I guess that it just fit my setup best that way.
