Atheists: Does saying "Thank God" offend you?

I've always wondered. Example: My friend: The Phillies finally scored a run. Me: Thank God!

I can't imagine it would offend them, unless they're the kind who get upset when you mean it. They're the annoying ones. If I have to listen to atheists on TV every freaking day talk about evolution, the big bang theory, and taking the Lord's name in vain, guess what? I'm going to thank my creator once in a while, so get over it. If you can say stuff that you believe is true and that you think is OK to say, then I'm going to say stuff that I believe is true and that I think is OK to say. I'm not going to stand for some double standard where you guys can brag about your belief system, but if I say something that even remotely implies there is a God; then I need to shut up because it might offend you.

    • No, then again I'm not American so I'm not easily offended.

      • I've often wondered the same thing. Same with "God bless you" when someone sneezes or "Merry Christmas."

      • I say that and other things that have god in it all the time. It's just apart of how I speak.

      • No, its not blasphemous to someone that doesn't care about blasphemy. Surely it should be Christians that are offended.

      • No, I say "Oh my god" all the time. Nothing offends me of that sort, only direct insults would offend me. Unless I know you're trolling.

        • I was always taught not to say it as it might be offensive to Christians. Even as an Atheist, it never occurred to me that it might be offensive to Atheists.

        • It's just an expression, so no. I say "Oh my god" sometimes, and I'm not religious. If someone were to say "God gave you this talent" about something I'm good at however, I would be offended. I wasn't given anything, I gained it by practice.

I grew up with people saying thank god and all that. Even I say thank god, but it's just something people say, to me at least. It only bothers me when someone says it in a manner that shows they mean it. Like. "We only have god to thank for that". Edit: Blasted Necros.

        • No. I say it myself which is rather weird, I suppose I just grew up saying it and now it's embedded in my mind.

        • No. I'm not religious and I say it all the time. It's not so much a religious term any more.

Not at all, I'm not a religious person....I just don't care for it. That being said, I don't get offended by those phrases and so on....why should I? To each their own. *sips tea*

          • nope. even i say it. it's a colloquialism. i -am- bothered by it when someone says "thank god the broncos won!" god had nothing to do with it. the hours and hours of training and practice that the players had helped them win.

I'm probably more of an apatheist (don't know; don't care) and no, it doesn't bother me. To delve into it a little deeper, I don't care if people pray publicly, say "bless you," or "Merry Christmas." I really don't care if someone believes or doesn't believe. People just need to be nice.

            • The only time it would slightly irk me is if someone was taking the credit out of mortal hands, say for someone's hard work resulting in an extraordinary outcome. If someone says "goddidit" I'd be a little irate I guess. Fortunately it doesn't happen in this country much
