Aren't there plans to launch a far better telescope into orbit anyway? I realize this means that less data can be gathered, which sucks, but it isn't as if we've lost the capability to detect other planets.

The Chilean VLT will probably assume those duties.

None thus far. The plans were to keep Kepler for another mission until 2016, but that isn't going to happen anymore, obviously.

Yeah, I just did some searching, it was the Hubble that was getting replaced with the James Webb telescope. We need to get our shit together and replace it.
