Is the Nvidia GTX 660 good for gaming right now?
Getting [url=http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4904410&CatId=3998]this[/url] laptop this week as its on sale with a 200 dollar price reduction. Now seems like the time. I'll be PC gaming fairly often. My one concern with this laptop is the GPU. Can this 660 generally handle games well enough for now and for the foreseeable future?

The 660 is a good model. should last you for a few years. also if you intend to use this laptop for gaming, I'd suggest getting windows 7 instead of 8. my cousins laptop has windows 8 and he cant play shit on it. I know he's tried both minecraft and iTunes on it, and it wont let him even use them.

Just make sure to connect it to a monitor, leave it in a cool area, and connect a mouse & keyboard to it.

8 RepliesDepends, my 6870 can handle anything very well. The Intel 4000 GPU (believe it or not) is very good, but not good enough for gaming. Also you shouldn't get a gaming laptop due to heat problems. >660 No, unless it's a 660ti, there's a reason it's the ti.

Like yeah they're not as good as desktops (obviously) but tons of my friends have laptops that aren't even FOR gaming; yet they can run games on high/max settings. I think they're a good idea for gamers on the go. However, I wouldn't spend more than $500-$600 [b]tops[/b] on a laptop.

It's a good card, you'll be playing stuff on high for the next year or more. But like all cards it will become underpowered after 2+ years.

I can run saints row 4 and LoL on maximum graphics settings and still have a consistent 60+ fps. I'd provide more examples but my PC game budget has been in the red for a while. oops, didn't realize this was necroed. sorry people

Currently, a R9 270x and/or a 660 desktop should be able to run BF3 at 1080p with only a few settings adjustments off Ultra. Any less and future games may start to be out of reach for max settings at 1080p. Anymore is moving into the overkill range, IMO. If you are looking for a gaming PC, then build it. Laptops generally aren't that great for gaming in comparison to desktops. Edit: NVM, someone necroed this thread.

BF4 is a breeze, Skyrim only lags when you start laying on some seriously heavy stuff. However this is usually due to the shader department, in which case it is best to get something in the 650 range on a desktop instead. aaaaaand just checked the date. Y the bumps?

I would say yes. It will probably last you a year before you'll need to upgrade. That's a bad thing that's beginning to happen with PC gaming. The requirements for games are moving higher at a faster rate.

If you're planning to play games at 720p, sure. It's great. If the laptop has a full 1920x1080 screen but, and you want to play games at 1080p, lolno. You need at least a 770m for that.
