Does anyone else suffer from Morsicatio buccarum?

Also known as cheek chewing. I've chewed my cheeks since I was little. It's relatively harmless, but it's still an annoying habit. Chewing gum helps, but I can't chew gum all the time. Has anyone here ever had to quit doing this? How did you?

  • Is this just bitting on that little layer of skin on the inside of you mouth? I pull at it with my teeth all the time, I dont think ive ever done any damage to it though

  • I used to do this a bit frequently and would also grind my teeth. It was mostly due to stress but ever since I started smoking both habits have all but vanished. Not that cigarettes are a healthy choice, of course. Anyway... I suggest you find the direct cause of this cheek chewing. Is it stress? Anxiety? Such are the questions you must ask yourself. All I'm really saying is that you can't effectively solve the issue unless you know why you do it in the first place. I recommend meditation at the very least. Even taking a mere 15 minutes every other day or so to simply clear your mind can help out.

  • Nah, but an ex of mine actually chewed on her tongue, and you could see where she had chewed a section off.

  • No, but I always hate it when I bite the inside of my cheek. Afterwards you can't stop even if you try.

  • I would try acupuncture. That type of therapy is great for reducing or eliminating habitual things. Wouldn't hurt to at least call someone and ask. Insurance might even cover this.

  • I use to do that a lot. I would get small chunks to come off and bleed in my mouth. I hated it. But I guess one day I just stopped.

  • Yeah, but I've never bitten hard enough to form lesions. It's more like I just barely close down hard enough so that it folds, and then scrape the tissue along my teeth.

  • Why couldn't you just have asked if we chewed our cheeks in the title? OT: Yes.

  • Yes, I do sometimes. Why? I couldn't ever tell you. Stupid brain and its fondness of annoying habits.

  • I dated a guy who had a nasty habit of that. I couldn't stand it but no I've never had that problem. The worst thing that happens to my inner cheek is an accidental biting and that shit hurts!

When I was little, I did it a lot, till some tissue ripped off and I tasted blood. I eventually stopped around 10ish, it was kind of automatic. I then moved onto compulsive handwashing though, and eventually I got a diagnosis of OCD, so compulsive cheek chewing was probably a symptom of that (at least the doctor thinks so). Funny thing is, when i read this, I unintentionally started chewing my cheek for the first time in like 8 years, haha hopefully it doesn't come back. Is it related to an anxiety thing? For me it was, so once I got help, I learned to deal with anxiety and stopped doing compulsive rituals. Edit: Didn't notice the necro bump....

      • I did up until I was ten or so. Then I just decided to stop and eventually it never happened again.

Not intentionally. But every so often I accidentally bite the inside of my cheek while eating. Hurts like hell. I did break the nail biting habit about 18 years ago after doing it all the time. Not coincidentally, I stopped right as I started doing tree work and had filth under my nails all the time. So.. clearly, the proper course of action for you is to smear filth on the inside of your cheeks.
