Might help if you said what kind of thing you are interested in. For example, the Wheel of Time series is, I believe, the greatest series of books ever written. But if you aren't into Fantasy stories then perhaps it wouldn't appeal.

 • Just read the prologue of The Eye of the World and I'm liking it. So is this Saidin a physical being or is he an entity? N why is Lews shouting light forgive me but still he goes to the tainted Saidin? I've probably read it wrong but it seems lewd was good, then bad, now good again. But why did he go to the saidin. Again I've probably got it all wrong. I can tell already its gonna be good series :)

 • Saidin is the male half of the one power. Females channel Saidar, the female half. Together, they are the One Power. Two halves of a whole. They like to use this symbol. It's what female channelers us- the white half, anyway. As for Lews Therin... I explained the prologue to you, but in all honesty you're not supposed to understand what the hell is going on in the prologue for like three books. I didn't spoil anything at all- I promise- but it's just that the understanding of that scene comes over a long period of time. It's just history though- nothing I typed will give a single shred of anything away of the plot of the main series. Anywho, Lews was trying to do good, went insane and killed a bunch of people (just like every male channeler did), was brought back to Sanity by one of the Dark One's servants that wanted him to experience the anguish of his deeds, then in his last moments of sanity died by creating Dragonmount- a mountain range. Think of Saidan like... hmm. Ever read Eragon? He does magic and strength comes from energy around him, right? Well in WoT, they do magic partly based on their own strength but also from the energy of the One Power, which is just a 'magical power' certain people have the ability to tap into. Many are born with this gift, and some can be taught it. Anywho the prologue rocks- it made me buy the rest of the books almost immediately, haha. But the book takes a different tone for now- because it's going to be setting up a lot of stuff. My gosh though, the end of book 1 is really cool. And the entirety of book 2 is phenomenal. One of my favorites. Book 3 is very interesting, but slower. Book 4 has 150 boring as poop pages then stays awesome the entire time. Book 5 sets up a lot of cool stuff. Book 6 is the SINGLE GREATEST BOOK UNTIL THE END OF THE SERIES. Books 7 and 8 are boring, in my opinion. Book 9 is boring until the end when the biggest event in the entire series until the end of the series happens. 10 is alright. 11-14 are phenomenal. Just my opinions.

 • Usually when I give my preferences, people ignore them anyways. But fantasy is definitely my favorite genre.

 • Ah. Well in that case, Wheel of Time is the greatest series ever written, will take you ages to finish, and has an ending nobody saw coming that isn't some lame plot twist and that makes a completely satisfying conclusion. The series ended last January after around 25 years. 14 books. The first one is called 'The Eye of the World' by Robert Jordan. I've recommended it to a few people on Bnet and not a single person has told me they regret it. I was recommended it to from Bnet myself 3-4 years ago and... well, it is simply the greatest tale I have ever read. I'll type up a short background. This is all backstory covered in the prologue, moreorless. 3000 years before the story takes place, mankind was at war against the Shadow. They fought the Dark One, essentially Satan but who manifested itself in many forms corrupting people, society, and spawning terrible creatures. The Dark One was imprisoned by The Creator (i.e. God) at the beginning of time, but broke free because humans opened up a bore in the Prison. That started the war since the Dark One, while not free, could touch the land. The bore was created through channelers- men and women who had the gift to channel 'The One Power' to do amazing things (i.e. magic). One man, The Dragon, the most powerful male channeler in the world, brought together 113 other male channelers, rode to the place the Bore was opened, and tried to close the prison. They succeeded in patching the prison, but as the Dark One's last act, he touched the male half of the One Power that sealed him in, tainting it. The 113 male channelers went insane from this touch, and every other male channeler that touched the One Power throughout the world also slowly went mad. In their madness and with their immense power to channel, they created oceans and mountains and destroyed the entire world. This was known as the Breaking of the World. The Dragon goes to his home searching for his loved ones. An agent of the Dark One uses the One Power to temporarily cure him of his madness so he can see what destruction he has brought upon the world. The Dragon, Lews Therin, looks upon his home and remembers he, in my madness, slaughtered every person he had ever loved. Enraged, he channels the power go to a faraway place and he channels more than anybody ever had before. He raises the ground and creates vast mountains to be his tomb, crushed by his loss and what he had done. The books take place 3000 years later. Prophecy says the Dark One will again be free, and the Dragon will be reborn to fight him. He will break the world anew and unite the world in one giant battle, or the Dark One will unravel time itself and bring an end to all things. That is just in the prologue of the first book, by the way. .. I highly recommend it. If you couldn't tell. I got chills just writing that...

 •
Robert Jordan.
For years, my dad had a huge ass bookcase and he had an entire shelf filled with Robert Jordan books. I've never cared for them, but I think it contains the series that you are referring to. Those books are freaking huge.

 • Yeah, each book is a good 700-1400 pages. The text isn't very large, either. Great books.

 • Cheers! Recommended for all. Fun fact. The original author actually died in 2007, right before he could write the conclusion. But he knew he was dying (an extremely rare disease with no cure), so over the course of months he wrote nothing but notes and spoke into recorders about how he wanted the series to end, even on his deathbed. The guy who finished the last 3 books did a phenomenal job, and he was handpicked to finish the series. He writes in a different style, but just as awesome. And it's cool because after the story concludes, the final chapter- the VERY last chapter of the series, after the replacement wrote 3 entire books... is written by Jordan, the original author. He wrote the final chapter before he died, as he promised fans he knew exactly how the series was going to end decades before it did. So he wrote it down before he died. It's really cool to go from Jordan, to Sanderson (the replacement), and back to Jordan at the very end.
