The Xbox One is stuck in this weird no-man's land between digital and physical media. It wants to move to the cloud - game sharing, purchases, trades, access to library from anywhere - while simultaneously supporting physical disks. Which is a problem, because it means that there will be two copies of the game for every one that's purchased: one that's stored on the HDD and another that's stored on the cloud. As long as you're online, MS can track your local game usage and deactivate the cloud copy accordingly, but when you aren't online... well, darn.
But a Redditor managed to catch Major Nelson's attention - to be fair, the Major has been pretty active on Reddit - and give him a simple fix: if a player is offline for more than 24 hours, they can either disable local play and allow cloud sharing, or disable cloud sharing and allow local play. This neatly addresses the issue of having 2 copies of a game, and it doesn't require the use of the game disk either.
The "game disk" solution that has been tossed around is also pretty simple: if a player is offline for more than 24 hours, cloud sharing is automatically disabled, and the player is prompted to insert the game disk. This ensures that you can't give the disk to a friend and let him play, while you're still playing offline. And, coincidentally, this is exactly how game usage works now: insert disk, play game indefinitely, no futuristic cloud sharing.
Any of these solutions should be implemented on the XB1. Cloud sharing/access is amazing, but implementing a failsafe seems obvious, especially when it's something we already do every day. I don't believe the online policy is as big of a deal as people think, but it's hard to argue that requiring a check-in isn't restrictive.

4 RepliesThe online policies are hardly a problem, most people complaining about it currently are on the internet and have no problem with being online. And if Microsoft can add a special way of playing offline for more than 24 hours for those who are in unique circumstances, than all power to them.
