Mass Effect 4 characters
Mass Effect 4 could let you play as Garrus, Grunt, Aria or the Illusive Man Mass Effect 4 could feature one of the existing Mass Effect series characters as its protagonist, according to discussions by the Bioware developers. Players could take control of "one of Shepard's most loyal friends", Garrus Vakarian. Casey Hudson, Executive Producer for the Mass Effect series said Garrus has "had some of the most driven personal goals", is "a hero in his own right" and such a "bold and charming" character could make an engaging storyline for ME4. Meanwhile, Preston Watamaniuk, the Lead Designer for the series, believes basing the game on the Krogan and a melee combat system "could be pretty exciting", potentially letting gamers play as Grunt or Wrex. Mac Walters, Lead Writer for the Mass Effect series wants to focus on one of the smaller, less developed characters like Aria, The Illusive Man or Kai Leng for example. Mike Gamble, the Mass Effect series' producer, thinks that Javik, the sole surviving Prothean and star of the Mass Effect 3: From Ashes DLC, would steal the Mass Effect 4 spotlight.
Oh my god. No! Don't milk off the existing character set and have us play as Garrus. Do you know what that does? It kind of ruins the whole feel of the original game. Instead of the world feeling organic and real it becomes sterile. In Mass Effect 1 Garrus is just a random C-Sec officer who's frustrated and wants to do something meaningful and so decides to join you. He felt real, part of the larger universe that Bioware created. If they do something like making a new game all based on an existing character like Garrus, it turns sterile and boring because it feels like there are only ten -blam!-ing characters in the whole Mass Effect universe. You take the immersion and organicness out of the fictional universe if you keep using the same character for god damn everything in a fiction universe that supposedly comprises the entire Milky Way. And when you over-focus on a single character you take some of the mystery and interest out of that character. If we know everything about what that character has ever done, Garrus for instance, he won't be as interesting when we go back and play the original ME trilogy. We already know everything about him and his history. There's nothing left to the imagination. Have some -blam!-ing creativity and make new, interesting characters, like the writers for the first two games did. Ever since 3 Mass Effect writing has sucked. It looks like it's going to stay that way.
