Destiny's maximum map size.

It's three kilometers by three kilometers, which is equal to nine square kilometers. For reference, that is one square kilometer smaller than the playable area of Vvardenfell from TES 3: Morrowind and slightly larger than four times the size of Caspian Border from Battlefield 3. I've seen some confusion about this and wanted to correct it. This is from the Umbra 3 GDC 2013 presentation, watch it for yourself if you'd like. edit: By map size, I mean the total area that can be loaded at once. Destiny will not be, technically speaking, open world, so there could be plenty of these maps.

  • what is the impact on the potential size of a given worldspace in relation to variable lods. this new occlusion system is having a definite impact upon the scope of a potential worldspace. but are desiners taking advantage of instanced polygon cull by rendering visible objects at ideal lods. The object rendering in a game like this should have models that consist of a subdivided mesh that increases polygon count via tesselation dependent upon proximate visibility and also do the reverse for objects that are not in a position that requires a higher resolution model/ mesh. scalable textures that have smooth transitions betwen lods and are shared among subdivided versions of a model could theoretically allow them to push the envelope even further and bring a visual fidelity that is unheard of for a console based ip. it was stated that pixel count is inherent to the omega 3 tech. so it seems logical that the information could be used to automatically dictate mesh/ texture lod behaviors. biggest problem there is the fact that players can zoom in. although the more confined fov of a gun-sight might make the rendering process far more limited, as the engine could cull an even greater percentage of objects.

  • They said this was the size of each individual map without any more loading. That means that's maybe the size of one area on Mars for example, then maybe a little scene that takes place of a load to lead to the next area that's just as big. I'm thinking multiple areas this big on one planet or location

  • So will worlds be limited or can we explore whole planets?

  • I didn't watch the whole thing, and a lot of it is over my head, but isn't it more like that's the max size of the Polygon soup? So, I'm thinking they could string multiple areas like this together and use things like mountains and fog to reduce the viewable area a la Skyrim. But I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

    • Taking into account unplayable areas like mountains and invisible borders, the playable area would probably only be 7 sq km.

    • but that map would not relate to every planet would it? i mean would the moon have the same map size as earth or Venus? it seemed to me that that particular layout or size was for earth.

        • But since the game engine can load things in the background, wouldnt they be able to string these together without loading screens? or would 9km^2 be the absolute largest one loading screen could offer?

        • The Caspian Border map is ruffly 1.4 squre kilometers, this is not an exact size however so I would say the maps in Destiny are a little over twice the size of it...
