Do you consider someone with a GED less intelligent?

Do you consider someone with a GED to be less intelligent than someone who has a high school diploma? I asked this because due to a messed up child hood I wanted to get my GED. My plan is to get a PHD in physics. I wanted to know what everyones view on this is.

GED's just an American equivalence diploma, right? If so, they're certainly likely to be less intelligent, but it's not like I'd judge them on that. I know a few people who've completed their high school equivalency through TAFE, and they're definitely not the smartest people, but I wouldn't say any of them are any less intelligent than the average graduate from my high school.

    • It depends on the situation. Let's say someone had to drop out of school to take care of a sick family member or something along those lines. That person could very well be smarter than me, and is likely a lot more driven than myself, despite the fact that I go to a well-respected university.

    • I got mine because I knew that I was wasting my time sitting in class not learning anything. Especially when a guidance counselor pulled me into her office halfway through senior year and told me that I would not graduate since I didn't have a full credit for a freshman year history course. I reminded her that SHE recommended that I take a more advanced history course (in order to challenge myself) for my freshman year, I asked her about the requirement and that she had told me that taking the more advanced course would "grandfather" the requirement. She then lied and said that she did no such thing and that my only option was to take the course over summer after everyone else had graduated. I replied that she was ignoring the better alternative. She said that there was no alternative. I said, "Sure there is. I drop out today, take the GED next week, and you go -blam!- yourself." And that is what I did. I doubt that she did what I thought that she should.

      • Sort of. I won't generalize everybody with a GED but high school was not that hard to finish. But I do not like the idea of a mandatory senior project that results in NOT Graduating if it is not passed. 4 years of hard work to be put on the line over one stupid project? My school had a paper, my bro's had a presentation. Not right.

        • You shouldn't judge someone who has a GED as less than others. I'm going to have to get mine because I skipped a lot of High School and went to College early, so I never got my HS Diploma.

        • Not really. Admittedly I don't really know anyone that has one.

          • I don't think graduating high school or getting a GED are either particularly good measures of intelligence. With that being said, I think that the test for getting your GED is a joke and is probably much easier than getting a high school diploma. I only say that since one of my friends dropped out of high school and got his GED and he says the test was a joke compared to high school.

          • Dropping out of high school is pretty damn dumb, because it isn't particularly hard and you get to go for free.

          • No, why would I? Passing that test shows that you have met the requirements for normal high school education. It's the same as If that person had graduated high school like the majority of folk.

              • No but i do question their dedication and aptitude. HS is pretty easy to finish on time even if you dont apply yourself (right here) . I mean if you had a baby or some unforeseen event maybe, but just dropping out for no reason? Doesnt make sense.

                • I would say that for most getting a GED is just being lazy. That being said I have seen a couple of people get a GED when they were 14-16 years old so that they could skip high school and go strait to college.

                • Anyways, I don't like generalizing but a lot of people who drop out do drop out because they're lazy and stupid. I'm not saying all, but I'm saying a lot. Nomsayin?
