• Started a new topic: 343 is doing a great job with Halo(128 Replies))

  • At least it wasn't the forced romance pile of crap that was Halo 4.

      • Halo 2 was my favorite part of the story since you get to see the Covenant side of things. The story just exploded in every way. Halo 3 had possibly the best ending for Halo. No one really wanted to see the clichéd death of a hero or a Start Wars ceremonial return. Drifting in space nearing a strange Forerunner planet made Chief a legend and gave the story a possible launching point into something new and mysterious.

      • Literally nothing happens until the end of The Storm and at no point in the first 4 missions do you ever get the impression that Earth (the planet we spent like 30 years trying to hide which has become humanity's final bastion) is ever actually in any danger. It's completely disconnected from the narrative of Halo 2, why couldn't we have had a prologue mission or two where you escape Delta Halo as Arby with Johnson/Miranda/Spark and get back to Earth while John attempts to assassinate Truth and ends up falling from the Keyship? Then the game which was advertised as the conclusive episode to the trilogy and will "finish the fight" leaves 12 major plot points hanging which were either unresolved or were introduced in the last mission of the game... Yup, Halo 3's story sucked alright. Almost as much as the dialogue ("TO WAR!")...

        • My favorite Halo story would be Halo Reach, Especially that ending. Halo ODST comes very close to Reach though

        • I thought 3 had the best campaign, I find it difficult to listen to the story in games, I'm always thinking about the visuals like animations and cinematography to concentrate on what they're saying. I need to play through a campaign a few times before I fully understand what's going on. I guess my ineptitude for script writing gives games some replay value for me ha.

        • After playing through all 3 relatively recently, I gotta say I think Halo 2 is the best. I just loved playing as the Arbiter. Even on Quarantine Zone/Sacred Icon.

        • Gotta disagree. H3 was quite weak when it came to campaign writing/story compared to the first two games. Halo 1 and Halo 2 had the best story in my opinion. Halo 1's story was more enigmatic than Halo 2's pragmatic and dramatic story. However, Halo 2's story felt very short and summarized. Halo 3's story felt summarized and rushed and furthermore the first half of the game (right before the Ark) the game had a nonexistent storyline; ending was one of the best I personally experienced in a videogame though. ODST's story was just near flawless for an expansion not for a full 60 dollar game. Reach's story was in some ways better than H3 because it was more focused but really there was no reason to mess with canon that had been established 10 years ago and the chracters in Reach needed more screen time. Now for Halo 4, personally I only see Bungie's Halo universe as the true story canon. People will disagree with me and that's okay. When I played Halo 4, I played with an open mind and after finishing the game I felt 343i had no idea what they were doing. There was nothing good about the story or characters.

          • From a universe fan, best story in Halo games: 1. Halo 2 (fantastic) 2. CE (simple and sweet) 3. Halo 4 (Respected EU canon and brought it into the games) 4. Halo Wars (Fantastic story that existed in its own bubble. Really learned a lot in the Halo verse) 5. Halo 3 6. ODST (I didn't fancy it too much, it didn't have that big of an effect on Halo's story) 7. Reach (Obvious reasons)

Definitely my most played campaign, as well as the one I had the most fun with. Especially mythic while trying to shield yourselves with dumpsters.

            • In terms of it being fun, Halo 3 had a good campaign. However, there wasn't much to the story because it was the end. I'd have to say that, except for that annoying cliffhanger, Halo 2 easily had the best story and campaign of the series. It was really nice to be able to see things from the Covenant perspective.

            • I'm partial to Reach's story, but I loved Halo 3. One of my all-time greatest games. Halo: Reach and Halo 3 were/are the best of the series.

            • The campaign itself was epic and I loved it... The story felt like it was building up to nothing though, the last few levels felt like Bungie wrapping the story up quickly.

              • Finally, someone else agrees. Iris promised so much. And it was going okay until the end of the Ark. Despite the first half of the game being 'oh, guys, the Covenant has excavated this artefact, but lol we wont show u wuts up until halfway through the game.' And then the Covenant and Cortana and Halo happened. Although the ending and Johnson's death were awesome.

                • Yep. But it did have the best friendship development (Arby and Chief, and to a lesser extent, Johnson and Chief) in a Halo game (Cortana and Chief is distinct, more than friendship).

                • Halo 3 felt rushed. It was always "Hurry Chief!" It was pretty constantly frenetic pacing, at least in terms of the dialogue and story. There was a lot of the mythical exploration from Halo 1 and 2 that 3 didn't ever have, and that I really missed. That did disappoint me. Halo 1 had the best presentation of the story, while Halo 2 had the actual best story, in my humble opinion. ODST is up there on both counts. Reach had high and low points. We actually got to explicitly see civilians suffer the wrath of the Covenant for the first time, which was a brand new level of gut-punch for Halo (nothing new for Call of Duty types, but for Halo that was a pretty big deal). Noble Team's character dynamics stank, no denying that. Some of the missions were also disappointing, like Tip of the Spear. But I don't think I hated it at any point, especially not like Cortana in Halo 3, or the Library from Halo 1 or the Sacred Icon/Quarantine Zone from 2. Losing Flood was a good thing for Reach and ODST.
