Hi Flood!
I seem to be at a fork in my life future wise.
So I'm currently studying Mechanical Engineering and I'm about to finish up my 2nd year. Anyway I got into this thing as a kid when I played hours of Need for Speed which eventually got me into to cars.
For a period of time I wanted to be a race car driver professionally, i soon realized that wasn't very practical, so I wanted to work in the automotive industry and now I'm feeling like that wouldn't be much fun if I'm not designing something or working on a car hands on.
So now I'm curious what else can I do with this degree? I'm still into the material like mechanics and thermodynamics, but I think me realizing that my dream job is impractical kinda ruined it for me. Or maybe I just need to realize what my passion is again.
Need some sincere advice or tips, all are welcome.
TL;DR - dream job is impractical or hard to succeed with. What else can i do with my degree?

5 Replies3rd year Mech eng student here OP. MEchanical engineerings probably the most diverse field, since a mechanical engineer is required almost anywhere. You can still sub-major into Automotive systems, youd have to learn about vehicle design, turbo designs, internal combustion thermodynamics and vibration analysis. Or there energy production sub-majors, that involves more heat transfer and air conditioning applications. Mechanical engineerings big in the mining industry, its more of a short term career imo but pays well. If you feel youre still not into mechanical engineering, you can side step into civil or mechatronic pretty easily. Or take a big leap into electrical, software or biomedical engineering.

Be a mechanical engineer? it isn't Rocket science....or is it?

Aircraft rely on all type of things designed by mechanical engineers, as well as spacecraft.

Mechanically engineer things, of course.

4 RepliesYou're 2 years in and you still haven't found out that everything that is mechanical was made by a mechanical engineer? Tractors, cars, electric fans, blenders, elevators, all sorts of inventions, dude everything. Getting a job is super easy as a mechanical engineer.

Or maybe I just need to realize what my passion is again.
Passion does not exist in engineering.

Use the money from the job you are in school for to pay for you to get better at your dream job. Pretty much any extreme sport is self funded right away. If you want to do it, you have to fund it.

You can do a lot with it. Engineering degrees give you a lot of flexibility.

I'm an Engineer, try for some of the high tec manufacturing industry, they are always looking for robots to replace workers. You could try to go into other private industries, but if all else fails, enter the military. They may suck your soul out but it beats becoming a handyman. Or you could chase your dream... that would work as well.
