do i have to play Dead space 2 in order to understand 3?

Not really BUT, Dead Space 2 is a must play. Easily my favorite in the series.

Yeah you'll be pretty lost in Dead Space 3. Dead Space 3 does not improve really on graphics or gameplay so it won't be that bad. Just play Dead Space 2.

Anyway read [url=http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Brethren_Moons]this[/url]. It talks about what goes on in the third and essentially the whole premise of Dead Space. Please note, it's not about the second specifically, but the information it gives provides understanding of the whole series.
