I'm completely for ending all of this racial bull crap. A lot of universities today will pick a minority who has worse grades than a white male simply because they're a minority. It's ironic that people say that they're not racist when they still practice racist things. I mean I get why affirmative action was instated in the 70s, but now we don't need it because the vast majority of America is not racist anymore. Well, at least towards minorities. The very fact that most colleges select candidates based on their race tells me that we are still very racist, just in a different way.
Do you agree?

As a white going into college not long from now, I find it maddening that someone who hasn't put in the work that I have over the course of basically my entire life could be admitted to a university just because they're black, or Hispanic, etc., etc., etc.. And don't call me racist; schools of higher learning are mainly based around the idea of students who show more intelligence and academic drive than their peers being given the opportunity to further their education. That's not to say, however, that I don't agree with others being given that kind of opportunity; in fact, it's just the opposite. People just need to realize that there is such a thing as some people being smarter, or more artistic, or more creative, etc., than others. No offense.

A student's ability is all that should matter.

Question: Is it ever the case that someone be let in over someone with a better academic record because they belong to a minority group? If so, how is this situation not unfair to the one with a better academic record? If not then what is the problem?
-
-
College Admissions and Scholarships should be based on academic performance and economic need alone.
-
Yeah, it shouldn't. But if I have the same GPA and accolades as a white guy, the white guy will still be chosen over me, even if we have the exact same grades and history of service.
-
Did you know that affirmative action isn't the same thing as choosing people based on their race?
-
Finally. I hate how minorities get accepted when they have shit grades to make the college look diverse.
-
I completely agree. The fact that they choose a minority is ironically...implying that they are mentally handicapped and need special exceptions. That is racist.
-
Affirmative Action is ridiculous. It completely ignores individual situations in favor of a broad-sweeping declaration that all people of a certain race are disadvantaged, and that is idiotic and racist in itself. Anything like affirmative action should be done on the basis of an applicant's income, or the income of his area. One of my good friends is 25% Hispanic. He has spent his whole life in my town, which is a fairly high-income area. He has faced absolutely no sort of discrimination, and nothing has stopped him from getting the schooling he wants, or acquiring his job. But, because he gets to check the "Hispanic" box on the ACT, he is getting attention from schools that would never, ever accept a white man with his grades. How is that fair to anyone?
-
Good.
-
Positive discrimination... what a load of shit, huh?
-
For a society that's not supposed to judge based on race we sure care about race a lot.
-
You should not get a degree just because you're African American.
-
Yeah, we're 'racist' in a different way - a way that's necessary and fair.
-
Dude America is just as racist as in the 70's sure you have a black president but doesn't mean it's gotten better
-
I'm a little irritated that in order to end segregation, we built colleges for black people only.

Edited by Euler: 5/4/2013 5:48:18 AMI'm pretty sure this applies to genders as well. Any university with a majority of male students, however slim, will be open to criticism over selective recruiting policies. Returning to races, the university I attend gives full-fee paying scholarships to Aboriginal people who obtain scores of 90 or higher - whereas for the rest of the population, it's a 99.90 final score to enter.

I never understood affirmative action. Apparently it's to give minorities a fair chance, but it's not very fair at the expense of other races, is it? I don't understand how a white man with better qualifications can get pushed aside simply because of what he's not, and somehow it isn't racism.
