What truely broke halo 4 as a halo game?

Now, we already know that halo 4 has many problems. Cod multiplayer, bad developers, JIP, ect. But i just cant figure out exactly what broke it as a halo game. Was it the campaign, or the multiplayer? A decent amount of the fans buy halo games for their story, while the others buy it for the multiplayer. But both have received numerous complaints. Its unclear weather a halo game is defined by the multiplayer, or the campaign. So what broke halo 4 as a game, the campaign, or the multiplayer?

  • There was just nothing good about the game. I literally can't think of a single thing I liked about Halo 4. It had an absolutely botched multiplayer and the lame addition of Spartan Ops. And I usually don't care about the story, because the multiplayer has always been where it's at for me when I play Halo. But with Halo 4, I actually thought the story was horrible. Making Chief more "human" and having it basically be a love story between him and Cortana...it was like really bad fan fiction. The parts with Cortana in the older Halo games always irritated me, so having her as a constantly present main character in Halo 4 was like my worst nightmare. At least she won't be coming back for future titles.

  • The Covenant look jacked up I still have no idea what the plot was Horrible weapon balance The maps were mediocre at best Where is my plasma rifle? The flood can't use other weapons No custom game options Intense lag Ugly armor Corana was more annoying than ever Custom loadouts Join in progress Ordinance drops No ammo for default weapons on maps Horrible characters

  • I personally thought Halo 4 had the best story. It felt a bit more 'professional' than previous Halos. In the story, you had this Human who is less 'human' than his A.I. companion and this A.I. is the only one who can bring out his human side, but when
Cortana dies
it's like Chief loses his humanity. Older Halos never really showed that kind of deep symbolism (Except for Halo: Reach. Kat, died of a headshot. Carter died with his ship. Jorge died with a big bang. 6 died alone. Ect....). In previous Halo games, chief, you were the center in the universe in everything you did. You single handily change the tide of the war by yourself. WTFBBQ? Halo's story have always been pretty cheesy to me (Especially Halo 3 and 2.) and it never really fleshed out the characters (In the progress of one game alone not 2 or more games.) . I never really had high expectations for it nor did I really care for it. Their were alot of down sides with Halo 4 aswell. Commander Palmer and Captain Del Rio. Must I say more? I also wish alot of the stuff were explained better. I knew what was going on the entire time I played, but I'm sure alot of players didn't. The way to do this would have been to have more to the prologue. It was better than nothing, but it could have been better. It should have quickly explained the things in Chief's life and humanity in less than 4 minutes. Also, the Storm faction could have been explained alot more. Lastly, the Forerunners. Nobody in the entire time they found the Didact ever put emphasis of him being a FORERUNNER and The Librarian's speech could have been better explained. Now the gameplay for the campaign itself, was pretty lame. Halo 2 definitely had the best campaign gameplay; it was alot of fun to play. Tl;DR If Halo 4 is fanfiction caliber, the Halo trilogy is Micheal Bay caliber.

    • Here is what it is. Its a game that does COD multiplayer poorly. People play halo because its different than COD, more challenging, more trash talking because its more a 1 on 1 battle so its about your own skill level. 343 turned that skill level into nothing because they turned bullet magnetism so high a four year old's hand eye coordination can get a 5 shot with the DMR. Next they provide kill streaks to players that are weapons instead of making ordinance drops give you abilities. So you get power weapons without needing to move around the map. There is literally no point in moving from a covered spot because there are no power weapons on the map. This is why maps dont flow particularly well because people just go to one part of the map and people think its poor map design. Its not, the maps need to have weapons on them to create that flow to every part of the map for engagements. Right now its just a chaotic mess and if you go into a game with a four man squad and don't move from spawn you win more often then not. This ends up making the multiplayer experience extremely dull and repetitive. Halo was known for its arena style of play. 343i went away from that and it killed the franchise. If halo 5 does not have the classic halo at its core I won't buy it because it just doesn't work. If I wanted the style that Halo 4 currently offers I would play COD because it does a better job. 343 just tried to put their own stamp on the game and it didnt work out. They could be immensely successful if they take halo back to its roots

    • I don't like the direction they took with the game overall. What really put me off was the campaign: storyline, presentation, art, everything. Older Halo games gave me this feeling that I was part of something much, much bigger that I didn't completely understand. And despite Halo being a sci-fi/space action game, that feeling let the game kind of transcend the genre. Halo 4 was too sci-fi for me-- and not in the mind-bending Asimov kind of way, just in the bleep-bloop robots kind of way. Master Chief's new armor, the Composer, the Librarian turning Chief into Neo, Prometheans in general, Darth Didact, the trench run... it's all very cheesy and generic. Then there's the actual story, which I'm 99% sure was adapted from a fan-fic, except 343i went the extra mile by removing any explanations. The humanization of the Chief was a complete failure, and the relationship between him and Cortana was awkward at best. I still cringe when I think about "she said that to me once".

    • The god awful campaign level design, Promethean enemies, and most importantly the fan-fiction writing of a plot.

The campaign was great but, for me, the MM was spoilt by ordnance drops, no set PW spawns plus an overall lack of weapons on the map. Still better than Reach MM though.

      •
The Random: -Custom loadouts -Meaningless ranks -Ordnance drops -No set weapon spawns -Spartan Ops -Taking away custom game modes and options -Changing iconic weapon and vehicle sounds -Perks -Unbalanced Weapons -UI -A whole bunch of little things that I don't feel like listing
All of that, plus the all around watered down difficulty. There shouldn't be a Halo game were my friend who for the most part sucks at Halo is capable of getting every single achievement without even breaking a sweat... It pisses me and my other friend off, 'cause he thinks what he did is so great and used to brag about it to a certain degree until we told him off.

        • The DMR is more powerful than the BR. Because swapping their damage values to make the BR the centre of the universe like it was in Halo 3 will make the game so much better. /sarcasm.

        • Seemed fine to me. Only problem I had was weapon placement. Seemed impossible to not run out of ammunition against the Prometheans. I don't think the stuff most people complain about is justified though. It's an alright game.

        • I think halo 4 is a good game but it not the halo I expected it to be. The campain sucks and the multiplayer is not fun, its not the halo game I wanted it to be. I think halo 3 was the best halo game campain and multiplayer

        • The community broke Halo 4 like it usually breaks every other Halo game down then eventually talks about how great it is when comparing to a future Halo game.

        • Halo should have ended with Halo 3, making more games is what broke Halo. But as for Halo 4 specifically: -Custom loadouts -Meaningless ranks -Ordnance drops -No set weapon spawns -Spartan Ops -Taking away custom game modes and options -Changing iconic weapon and vehicle sounds -Perks -Unbalanced Weapons -UI -A whole bunch of little things that I don't feel like listing

          • I find Halo 4 as a decent game, but it could have been better. The whole ordeals lately are disappointing, but for the first time in a new studio, I hope they learn from their mistakes. Amidst all the shit, I still find potential in 343, but so far, they haven't gotten the right footing until recently.

          • I have never had a game lag on me. I played Halo 4 and the lag is bad, people are dropping out of games like crazy, and I've sat at more "Black Screens" than I have ever. It got better after a while, but I feel like the Halo 4 servers are pretty bad.

          • The maps: I find none of them interesting or fun. Each Halo game before 4 has large maps that support vehicles. Halo 4 on the other hand has maps that barely support them and it doesn't have any large maps for them. Forge: The game really has no forge maps. The default 3 are too small to do anything large with and the other 2 have structures that can't be deleted. Those structures take up a large portion of the area they are in. They did add Forge Island, but the problem is that those islands are small. The rest of the map is nothing but water. When people were asking for a flat areas. They probably want a map that's like Forge World with sections that have large flat areas. I know Forge World wasn't any better for flat areas, but at least you could do a lot with the other areas. Forge Island on the other hand has no other areas besides those islands and water. All the removes they did: Each main Halo game in order is an improvement over the other. It might not be in gameplay, but for content wise it is. Halo 4 on the other hand just felt like one big downgrade because of all the things they removed. Removes: -Playable Elites. -Campaign theater. -Campaign scoring. -Assault. -Race. -Invasion. -Big Team Objective. -Firefight. -UNSC aerial vehicle for MP/custom games. -The Infected being able to use other weapons besides the sword. Those changes they did: The changes they did for the 2 gametypes ruins them. It takes the fun out of the Flood when they can't use any other weapon besides the sword. It takes the enjoyment out of CTF when you have to avoid the flag at times. And you can't drop the flag so you are screwed out some points. The changes to the races couldn't have been slightly like Bungie. No, they had to do it in a way which makes them hardly look like what they are supposed to be. Changes: When you touch the objective you automatically pick it up. It wouldn't be so bad if you can drop it, but you can't. Good thing 343 gave us that pistol. Because we all know that rocket launcher I have would be useless against that group of enemies and warthog that is coming at me. They removed the option for the infected to use other weapons besides swords. They couldn't have simply just gave them a Flood skin. Because that wouldn't be enough change. They had to do it in a way that would ruin the gametype. The Grunts hardly look like Grunts. They are the same shape, but their head looks like a shark and they have skin. The Bungie Grunts look like they have some type of shell. Hell they don't even wear the breathers anymore. They have some type of tube. That's not going to do them any good. When they breath the gas they are going to be breathing in oxygen which is poisonous to them. The Jackals don't even look like Jackals. Instead of them looking like birds they look like a piranha dinosaur thing.
