The dawn of the age of aerial civilian drones is rich with possibilities for people far from the war zones where they made their devastating mark as a weapon of choice against terrorists.
The unmanned, generally small aircraft can steer water and pesticides to crops with precision, saving farmers money while reducing environmental risk. They can inspect distant bridges, pipelines and power lines and find hurricane victims stranded on rooftops.
Drones – some as tiny as a hummingbird – promise everyday benefits as broad as the sky is wide. But the drone industry and those eager to tap its potential are running headlong into fears the peeping-eye, go-anywhere technology will be misused.
Since January, drone-related legislation has been introduced in more than 30 states, largely in response to privacy concerns. Many of the bills would prevent police from using drones for broad public surveillance or to watch individuals without sufficient grounds to believe they were involved in crimes.
So, in addition to the government using drones, what about private companies (like Google, for example)? What laws do you think we need to protect people's privacy while not letting paranoia hold back progress at the same time?

Armed? Hell No. Surveillance is iffy. Using a drone to patrol private land, for mapping, search and rescue, and research is fine by me.
-
They're gonna spray every city with a deadly virus that can kill 9 out of 10 people it comes into contact with it. They way they are gonna use it is by Drones. Wat

I don't understand the whole privacy argument. If you're outside of your place of living, then you didn't have any guarantee of privacy anyway. Anyone looking at you outside of your house is going against your "privacy".
-
dont need them. Its not needed to hunt down criminals or "terrorists." its a waste of money
-
Unfair.
-
But what if, like, we ARE the drones man.
-
For search and rescue operations and events such as those, I'm all for it. I oppose any armed drones in US airspace , as well as drones used to conduct any sort of surveillance for police operations.
-
Don't like the idea of them being used by any police force, but the other uses sound pretty good to me.

Edited by Garland: 3/30/2013 4:42:02 PMNo drones over American soil should be armed. As for surveillance drones, there'd have to be a huge discussion and new legislation to deal with privacy concerns. The other uses (farming, firefighting, infrastructure inspection, etc.) I have no problem with.

Using a Drone is the same as using a Helicopter I'm fine with the use of Drones

My internship involves building the smallest autonomous drone on the planet, so I'm happy with them :D

The US needs more drones.
