Michael Bloomberg funds $12m US gun law campaign
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is bankrolling a $12m (£7.8m) advertising campaign for tougher gun control laws. The television adverts will run in 13 states and urge voters to persuade their senators to back comprehensive background checks for gun buyers. Mr Bloomberg, a strong supporter of gun control, has said he is cautiously optimistic of winning over Congress, which votes on the issue next month. But his campaign has been dismissed by the National Rifle Association (NRA). NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre said Mr Bloomberg was "going to find out this is a country of the people, by the people, and for the people". "And he can't can't spend enough of his $27bn to try to impose his will on the American public," Mr LaPierre told NBC television's Meet the Press on Sunday. Mr Bloomberg told the same NBC programme that opinion polls showed there was overwhelming public support for tighter background checks.
So anybody from New York or the 13 other states that will have these adverts shown? (Is there a list of them somewhere?) What do you think of this? Also $27 billion for 1 man? My god that's probably the budget for New York to run and that's his own personal wealth?

  • Gotta hand it to Bloomberg on this one, he's doing a great job in trying to get some decent gun control in this country. LaPierre is a joke. He doesn't stand for the constitution, the American people, or his own members, he's a pimp for the gun manufacturers.

          • What a waste of money. All sales made through licensed FFL dealers are required to have a background check performed before transfer of any firearm takes place. Only private sellers are dismissed from such requirements, as per the 1968 Gun Control Act. Even then, a bill of sale needs to be obtained will basically the same information a buyer would give on a 4473, and certain stipulations apply, such as not being able to sell the item to person hailing from another state. Him and Feinstien need to go get laid, as their obsession with guns is completely out of control.

          • ... Is it not common knowledge that a background check is already required anytime you purchase a gun at a gun shop or a gun show? The only way around that is to by from a private seller (which even then it is illegal to sell a gun to a person that does not reside in the same state as you, and you should also get a bill of sale with the buyer's driver's license number, address, and any other information) or by buying it off the black market.

            • Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he limit the NYPD's ammunition to 7 rounds per gun? How is that idiot still mayor?

              •
NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre said Mr Bloomberg was "going to find out this is a country of the people, by the people, and for the people".
And most of those people are in favor of universal background checks. Also, who does LaPierre think that Bloomberg is appealing to with a television ad campaign?

                • I'm completely for the regulation of guns and mandatory background checks. I mean it's completely logical and there's no reason NOT to have background checks. It makes everyone safer and keeps the registered crazies from having the guns. However I am cautious with gun control because if it gets too out of hand, that's a very bad thing.

                  • You're surprised by this? That activists spend lots of money to push their ideals? Who do you think bankrolled the circus that was the Republican primary? Who do you think financed the operation to shut down the Fat Tax in Richmond CA? And I can sure has hell bet that the NRA uses millions for pro gun ads.

People keep wondering why we don't have a gun ban, an AW ban, a handgun ban, whatever. The answer is that the American people don't want one. But don't let that fact get in the way of the media's rhetoric.

                        • I find it saddening that not only are people to spend money to try and push their own agendas but also that the government actually takes the money. The NRA has an obsession with guns and then you get rich people who are obsessed with the government taking peoples rights using money to bribe. Just really really sad in my opinion.
