What happens when the servers will be shut off forever?

If Destiny will require constant online internet connection (presumably for all the game coming), that means it will need servers to run the game. Now, what happens when those servers are shut off? The servers will not be around forever. Look at Halo CE (original) and Halo 2 for example and old xbox live. I am concerned because years from now, I want to be able to play Destiny just like how I can play Halo 2 on my xbox even though online is disabled. Also, because it is on a console, it can't be patched to support online play like Myth 2 soublighter or Marathon (people can't mod online-required components out of console games well). In a few years if xbox live or PSN servers are down, you could end up having a $60.00 paperweight and a game you will never be able to enjoy again. This happens with almost all online required games at some point and it will one day happen to Destiny, especially if new consoles are coming. Also, how will servers be maintained for ALL Destiny games when they are out? 1 game will probably need a massive amount of servers but running 4 different games seems like a challenge which also concerns me, I hope all games are left on.

"Look at CE" Uh...CE never had internet access, nor was it hosted on servers, it had campaign, and LAN (people made tunneling programs like Xbox Connect to emulate the system link network, but that was all peer to peer and requires no servers, nor has it been shut down). For that matter, Halo 2 wasn't hosted on servers in the way you are describing, the servers that were shut down were the original xbox servers that let you connect to other players.

    • I think that the idea of games that require constant internet access to play is stupid. What if i dont have internet? i know a couple of people who dont have broadband, and some live in the middle of nowhere, where they couldnt get internet if they wanted to. and what about me? for the past week my xbox has been refusing to acknowledge that my router exists - if all my games required internet i would be screwed. This concept cuts out a lot of gamers, whether temporarily or permanently.

          • Hmm, you're talking about a problem that won't happen for more than a decade, also we don't know how the future Destiny games will interact with each other. I really wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If you want to worry about something worry about what would happen if Destiny does a Sim City?

              • I think in time this issue will be addressed, destiny will be around for a decade and depending on popularity and players active after the final games release, I see destiny being around for years after.

              • I'm more worried about what happened with Spore (The Invasion into your system), Diablo III ,and now Sim City with the whole online first day scenario crashing servers and the host of issues that start up with every game, rather than what happens ten years from now. It's a valid concern, I like Halo 2 also but It's not killing me that I can't play it. Knowing Bungie by then we'll be looking at some new adventure ready to fill the gap.

              • I mean I swore I read that they plan to support this new universe for ten years after the game comes out so maybe we should wait until this is actually a looming threat before people start freaking out over this.

              • Maybe they will come out with a patch before they shut the server down? They will be done with the 3rd game at that point. We might even have a new generation of console by then. It is a good question though.

              • "But what happens when the shut down the world of warcraft servers...!?" Well, for one, when they're shut down - I won't want to play the game anymore because I'll be playing new games. That's the great thing about games, there are always new ones. I really don't see a point in playing 10 year old games when I can play better looking, feeling, and handling games now. But, I'm not one big on nostalgia.

              • What if the world goes postapocalyptic and the internet shuts down? One wouldn't be able to play it even if one managed to generate enough electricity to power the console! Ugh, I'd tave to embark on an incredibly stranuous journey to Seatle just to get a patch.. -__-

Al(most al)l* old games have their servers shut down eventually, mainly due to the lack of player interest or the inability to keep the servers running. If Destiny still has a daily population of 50k at peak in 10 years, it won't get it's servers shut down. If people stop playing one "Destiny 1" almost entirely once "Destiny 2" comes out, then in 5 or so years after the sequel Destiny 1 could have its servers shut down (giving people plenty of time to scrounge up 60 bucks for Destiny 2). But, here's why I think they won't be shut down for a LONG time: Each one will likely be a contained story; campaign IS the online. What I think is most likely is that the world will change and new story introduced, but new story and new areas and new game modes and new armor and stuff is only accessible to those who've bought Destiny 2... BUT everything will happen on the same servers. If Destiny 2 players come back to the City, Destiny 1 players could see their cool armor. Stuff like that. So it'd be the same servers over time, never needing to be shut down. *see what I did there?

                • If I can speculate for a moment, I think the Destiny games will come out in chapters of the first game, much like Half Life 2's episodes (Though I never played the episodes, they sound the same). On top of this, they claim this business venture will span a decade (which I hope is successful every year). Within that time, there is the capability of passing an offline DLC through XBOX Live so when the inevitable happens, there is at least some content that can be played for nostalgia. I'm reminded of Phantasy Star Universe for the X360, where there was an expansion, but the 360 only had online mode. Because they never made the offline version for the expansion, you really only get half a series unless you find the PC version. So, there is the possibility that the game may be lost to oblivion, but who knows until some of the chapters are revealed and tweaks may be made.

There is an offline mode? I suppose this problem is why most console games have player-hosted matchmaking. I've been wondering the same thing and unless players can host their own servers in the PC version, I think it looks grim in this regard.

                  • Does it require online? I recall some interview saying that it can be played offline, but it is meant to be played with friends for optimal fun. I'm thinking of it in terms of Borderlands-esque story. It can be done alone if you so choose, but you won't nearly have enough as much fun. I wouldn't imagine having a retail game that absolutely requires online capability on a console, aside from maybe Brink or MAG and look how they turned out. And TF2 is more an exception than a rule in those terms. There also remains a rather large gaming demographic that has inferior or no internet access and I don't think Bungie would deprive them of their new IP.

                    • with any luck Bungie will spin Destiny off the way 343 industries is taking over halo development so it will continue. In other discontinued online games, other developers buy or develop servers for free to keep the community together. After ten years of Destiny, more than likely Bungie will come out with a new IP which everyone will jump onto anyways. As far as the time put into characters, it will probably turn out the way i described in the beginning of this post.

                    • It has yet to be announce if the future releases of content will be extensions of the existing world or completely new, but something tells me it will be extensions so bungie only has to improve on the servers they already have for the first installment.

                    • I've thought about this too, but by the time that bungie decides to shut down the servers I think I will probably have had my fill of the game anyways. I've heard that you might actually be able to play single player without being online, but I wouldn't call it reliable considering I've never seen a source to back it up.

At that time, there would be other networks to use other than PSN and LIVE, I'd imagine.
