Why aren't all drugs legal?

Clearly there are some drawbacks to some of them, but alcohol and tobacco worse than some of them. Just think about it; it all comes down to personal responsibility so why prevent others from being happy? If you don't feel like smoking crack then don't, but don't stop another from wanting to satisfy themselves.

    • If people want to go destroy their minds with drugs and alcohol, fine. But the minute their actions affect or harm others, thats when the law comes in.

In conclusion - Drugs and prostitution are freedoms which should be legal to use responsibly. And at the same time we should also be honest and educate on the harms of harmful drugs and not glamorize their use like we did with cigarettes. Prohibition is not an answer, it's part of the problem.

          • You seem to misunderstand something OP. You seem to think that if you don't use the drug then it doesn't affect you when the truth is it does. People get injured or killed when using things like meth or heroin and as a result have to go to the hospital. That means the hospital has to spend time and money on them which could be used elsewhere on people that actually contribute to society. Then a lot of the hard drugs out there produce violent tendencies among other things. There are reasons why they are illegal and should stay that way. Also most people are not doctors and do not know the side effects of mixing multiple different drugs together.

              • The law does not just stop violence to people. The laws are there to protect any value that society deems previous enough to protect. That includes the safety of the self. Prostitution is illegal for a variety of reasons even though it is a 'victimless crime.' The law protects values society decides need protecting.

                • The only "drug" that should be legal is marijuana. The rest of it should be illegal.

                  • because there are actually legal highs in the UK that are killing people. Except for prescribed drugs, drugs should remain illegal. I mean what do drugs do? Get you high and I would not like to see a high person drive or do anything for that matter because its dangerous. And before you say people won't do drugs and drive, how many people would say they won't drink and drive?? It's just an accident waiting to happen. Drugs that get you high have no use whats so ever

                      • I wouldn't want all drugs legalized, especially Heroin, cocaine and meth. You can't compare those to alcohol, those drugs ruin lives, and they are extremely addictive. Introducing them to the legal market would be a bad idea. Soft drugs like weed should be legal though.

                        • As someone who had 2 friends die from drug overdose, heroin and oxycotin, all drugs should be legal for recreational use. It would be easier to regulate the strength and potency of drugs that way.

                          • I don't mind regulating use of drugs based on how addictive they are-- not that I know where the line should be drawn. While someone might have felt like using the drug at some point, addiction can be a lifelong struggle. It can be hard to understand addiction's effect, especially if the circumstances when you started using a drug were less than ideal. Even the best of us don't act in a purely logical manner, free of the constraints of feelings and emotions and pressures, and there are some punishments that don't fit the crime. That being said, I have very limited knowledge about substances and their addictive properties. From what I can see, marijuana is safe enough that it should be legalized. A lot of it is cultural; we like alcohol and tobacco because they've stuck around long enough to be a part of mainstream culture (though tobacco has been marginalized).

Beats me. It's an unjust law which only causes far more harm.
