I think this is a better word to describe what those astronauts feel.
Awesome thread though, I really enjoyed the video and lecture.

I love when different cultures have one word for a very specific thing that requires in other cultures or languages whole sentences to express. Like "Schadenfreude" is german is the pleasure of seeing someone else's misfortune.
-
That's one of the best words I've ever heard, and if I could pronounce it, I would use it in my daily vocabulary.

Let me help you out. Shaw den frood.

Yugen feels like an apt word to describe how I feel when I look up on a clear night. Thank you for sharing.
-
No problem. I always try to instill a sense of the grandeur of the universe to others, but they never seem to understand how I feel. I too look up at the night sky when I need inspiration, or when I'm feeling small. Knowing that everything was made in the hearts of dying stars, and in that respect we are all connected to everything, all of us star dust, makes me feel big and important. We are so lucky to be alive, that just the simple act of existing is awesome.

Words are a poor substitute for thought
-
But, human as we are, do we have any other way of expressing thoughts other than the vehicle of words? You can keep thoughts to yourself, but without words, you will never be able to share them.
-
Nothing but hand me down languages that at this point in Human existence cannot convey proper emotion or an individual's Qualia. Most of communication is non verbal anyway.
-
Ahh yes while that may be true, you may be asking yourself why does language exist in the first place, to which the answer would have to be because it has to exist. While some emotional communication can be expressed without words, most complex ideas cannot, which means that without words not many scientific advances could be made, and humanity would not be where it is today, if still existing at all.
-
I've obviously thought about this quite a bit. What interests me is where it's all going and how much can I help to get it there while I can
-
Well the first thing you need to do is be the best you can possibly be. Strive for what you care about the most, and don't let anyone tell you no. The only place left to go is up and out, to populate the stars and discover the secrets of the universe. The more people you can convince to stop fighting and work together for the betterment of humanity, the closer we become to the stars and greatness itself. Destiny awaits, and it would love to have you along for the ride.
