Co-op Concerns

I wanted to voice a concern I am having as I learn more about the multi-player system described in the ViDoc and several articles. Bungie has always been above the rest with their matchmaking systems, but I am having a hard time understanding how people can quickly come in and out of my game as I play the main story line. The scenario they described with the Hunter coming in on a Pike to help Staten and Jones out was really cool, but what if I don't want help in that scenario? What if I enjoy the challenge and enjoy getting pounded a bit before I decimate the enemy? That specific story brought back memories of playing Borderlands with a friend who was 3 levels higher than me with much better weapons. I was tagging along like an annoying child; I was throwing rocks at the bad guys while he blasted them with a Ray Gun of the Gods. With a persistent world filled with a wide range of power/skills, I often ran into situations where the outcome of a story was solely determined by one player. It doesn't even have to be a stranger. My friends and I had to constantly keep players within the same level or two just so we could enjoy playing together. I worry that Destiny will force this as well. I play with friends who are much less available than I am due to their hours at work, so does that mean that I will have to back off or play with a lower character to enjoy a night together in Destiny? By the looks of it there are 5 or 6 game modes, so I am sure that I will be entertained for months on end with this game, but I just need some more information on this "hidden" matchmaking system before I'm totally sold on the idea. Anyone have any information/insights to ease my concerns?
