Maybe. My theory is a universe wide catasrophe that possibly made all planets inhabitable by humans, even earth (except for the last city, because it has the 'traveler' protecting it). If you'll notice most of the earth is covered in snow in the art... Just my theory.
But yours sounds good too, better infact.

but is that Earth we're seeing? or the distant creeping reaches of ze universe...
-
How do we know that was Earth and what happened during man's golden age?
-
Because the last city is based off of Puerto Princessa, no?
-
Still might not be earth. Could have been Mercury - from day 3 one side scorched the other chilled - Mercury symbol
-
I guess we'll find out :P I think it's earth.
-
could be a reference to the larger situation at hand the alien threat "burning" worlds vs. the human empire crumbles and slowly falls into disrepair the human empire fragments from within and burns vs. the slow creeping chill of death spreads
-
But there were references thrown around before all of this started that the game would be based on planets within our solar system. I don't think it snows on Mercury - but I'm sure they've taken liberties in artistically portraying the climates on other planets. I also think that the fact that each day's poem/excerpt can be seen as a loose translation of the accompanying planet is more than a coincidence.
-
It's a definite possibility no doubt. But if you're talking about the leak, the way they phrase the excerpt: 'Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age... Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City.' It just brings me back to the same thought, how do we know they're coming if we only ever occupied the Solar System. I'm imagining a vast network of abandoned sensory posts suddenly going dead long before their half-life, we investigate and find the monsters. If the monsters know we're in the Solar System why donn't they just amass a titan force and wipe the floor with us? The UNSC set up terraforming ops in other star systems and they had 150 years less to do it
-
Not just the leak I don't think. I think there was someone who did some testing on the game - talked about it in some supposed to be internal development blog but it was publicly released. I thought something in there said there was gameplay on multiple planets grounded in ideas from existing planets within the solar system. My guess for why they can't just wipe us out would just be the Traveller. But I don't know why we would still be exploring/fighting on other planets. Seems to me like if we're down to one city on earth we should focus our efforts there and expand later. So it could be snow seen on earth or for all we know that's just a concept of what these things look like on their home planet.

Ah the
DemonWare
blog? What I read might be missing parts but I didn't see anything. That's a very good point about the traveler, that was the main counter for what I was hypothesizing. Also exactly what I was thinking in relation to the expansion, how would we expand if we're trapped in the city, unless we can teleport to far out systems that are unknown. I don't know.
-
But the SNOGARD gave no indication of where they might be. I didn;t see a lot of snow in the city pictures and the Philippines has a warm, tropical, climate.
-
but what if the "location" of Puerto Princesa changed...
-
700 years from now? It probably would of only moved a few inches at most with plate tectonics.
-
the change of the distribution of mass in a rotating object can force massive changes in axial precession, weather affects it, as does the moon, and so on possible
-
No snow in the city, must be in the high mountains.
