The flip side of that, is the gun was so improperly stored that the 15 year old was able to access it and its ammunition.
I'm happy they made it out ok, but serious that's how accidents happen.

We have no knowledge on how it was stored. It could have been in a code locked safe. If that's the case, then it would be likely the 15 year old knew when and when not it should have been taken out.

15 years old is old enough to be able to know how to carefully use a firearm.

Eh, I wouldn't give a 15 year old an AR-15, maybe a 22, maybe. But that's just me.

There is enough of one. Again, just how I'd do it.

It's how you would do it, not necessarily how everyone has to do it. Without knowing the kid, we can't decide whether he's able to handle a firearm responsibly. If he's able to manage a .22, he should be able to deal with pretty much anything (other than huge rifles/shotguns that are bigger than him). .22 LR will still kill someone.
