Article says it all. So, what was that about AR-15s not being good for self defense?

  • I know that it says Houston, but that looks almost identical to my cul-de-sac.

    • The flip side of that, is the gun was so improperly stored that the 15 year old was able to access it and its ammunition. I'm happy they made it out ok, but serious that's how accidents happen.

      • I for one feel much safer knowing that teenagers have assault rifles.

        • The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun. Good for the kid. We need to stop calling these "assault rifle's". There are no different than any other semi-auto rifle you can get that just doesnt look like what the military uses.

Good for the kid, he did the right thing. The only thing I would do instead of what he did is kill them.

        • How can anyone defend this? A 15 year old had access to an assault rifle, grabbed it and shot a man multiple times!!! What the hell is wrong with you people!?

            • Shame he didn't kill them, now the system has to spend thousands a year keeping them in prison.

            • Of course it's good for self defense. It's a weapon military(s) use(ed) to go to war with. But a civilian doesn't need it.

              • Considering I've pretty much always lived in cramped apartments with paper thin walls I still wouldn't use one for defense. Good on him though.

                • Handguns are just as good for self defence. You don't need rifles like that

                  • And? Wouldnt it just have been safer to grab his sister and the phone and lock themselves in a room and called 911? Let the home insurance pay for what is stolen.

                    • Good on the kid. Not so sure about the guns though. I mean in this particular instance it probably saved their lives, but that doesn't make it right to have a gun around kids. :/

                        • No one ever said that an assault rifle wasn't good for defending, they just said that it was better for assaulting

What that boy did was pretty neat. I don't think that I am ready to support stricter gun laws. Assault rifle bans, hunting rifle bans, firearms bans, etc. I mean, who's to say that putting these kinds of laws into effect will actually stop the common criminal or drug dealer from down the street from getting a hold of these sort of things illegally? Just because it's written down as illegal on paper, doesn't mean that it's going to physically stop us or them, whoever, from owning these sort of things or getting a hold of these things illegally. Violent crimes and attacks, like the shooting at the elementary school in CT, and the other at the theater over the summer, are going to keep happening. It's just the way of the world. It's a -blam!-ed up place. And the only way we can truly begin to prevent incidents, crimes, etc. like this of this measure from ever happening again, is by donating to mental health research. Seriously. We need to start helping people with mental problems more, to better their lives, so that they can better handle lifes struggles and then maybe we can all avoid another incident like the mass shootings that went on this past year. I appreciate that Liberals are really pushing for better gun regulations, but I don't really think that passing any law is really going to make much of an impact as we like to think. The problem won't be solved right then and there as much as we wish it would. Sorry I went off on a tangent here about gun control. Just thought I'd get my voice out there.
