Was it just me, or did Cortana tell a huge lie? SPOILERS AHEAD

SPOILERS AHEAD After beating Floodgate, Cortana says that the Flood are coming to Earth in High Charity, that Gravemind doesn't know about the portal or the Ark, and that there's a way to stop them through the portal. But during The Covenant, High Charity crashes on the Ark. Master Chief and the Arbiter kill all the Flood (and theoretically Gravemind as well) by creating a new Halo and firing it. But this solution depended on all the Flood actually being at the Ark, and a new Halo being created there and fired. And Cortana had said that the Flood didn't know about the Ark. So if she didn't think the Flood would follow Master Chief to the Ark, what solution did she really have? Was she just trying to lure the Flood and Gravemind to the Ark to set this plan into motion? It seems kind of odd that she would lie to everyone to get this done, but it seems to me the only logical conclusion.

 • The new Halo rises into view in front of Chief, the Arbiter and Guilty Spark. Chief: "When did you know?" Spark: "Just now." Spark says the following on the level the Ark: "While I had a complete understanding of Installation 04, my Makers wisely limited my knowledge of all other strategic facilities". If Alpha Halo would be repaired after being blown up, i'm sure Spark would be the first to know about it due to the protocols. It must be programmed into the native Monitors and sentinels to build a replacement Halo. If Installation 04 would be repaired, Spark would have known. Also notice that Spark says he HAD a complete understanding of Installation 04, Spark is a Forerunner AI and doubt he would say "had" unless he knew 04 was completely destroyed by the explosion.

 •
pretty sure the level 'Cortana' is played in the flood infested High Charity which has already crashed on the Ark... and correct me if im wrong but what Gravemind means by 'her secrets' is that she holds the index to installation 04 and plans to blow it up etc etc
that's what I thought. EternalDistain, the cortana you rescue before going to the ark is simply a message to MC

 • Actually the way I remember it was as soon as you recue Cortana you fly to the Ark with the Arbiter. Then as you are making your way to the building flood dispersal pods come shooting down. So it seems like they followed you there. Gravemind tried to grab your pelican with his tenticles as you escaped High Charity but failed. The reason he knew where you were going was because like I said he knew Cortana's secrets. She was the one who told you to go to the Ark and activate the ring. [Edited on 10.20.2007 2:35 AM PDT]

 • All Halo rings have the same type of index. There are seven copies of the one index throughout the galaxy. This is because it would take time to gather each individual index but have the first one and you have them all. The index only says that this ring should activate and tell the other rings to get ready (by producing more sentinals). The new ring didn't even have its index yet (Guilty Spark) and any index could activate it.

I always thought that the secret was installation 04's activation index, because Cortana shows it the MC in the cutscene before the "secret" is revealed. [Edited on 10.20.2007 2:28 AM PDT]

 •

Posted by: EDreams This is a direct quote from the person who's brain was cloned to create cortana, when she actually got john-117 to join the spartans. ["I like to play games...do you like to play games" - Cortana at Cortana lvl.]
wow, great connection!
As a matter of fact many of the things cortana says when she first starts appearing on your screen are direct Dr. Halsey quotes from The Fall Of Reach. As for the new ring, it is a replacement, an exact replica of installation 04. But the question is: during the building of this new ring, wouldn't the index required be purposely different to the original, to prevent someone (cortana in this case) with the old index from activating the ring? Or maybe that process wasn't established; after all, the ring did still have a few more days before activation. Also, I'm sick of people saying that onyx has ANYTHING to do with halo 3 - it was destroyed during the events of halo 2 (Read Ghosts of Onyx).

It may be possible that the ships were in High Charity but it is unlikely (when Flood fly close to anything, in anything, they crash it).

 • Perhaps we should get things straight. Starting from Floodgate, the Infinite Devil Machine (the only name given to it in the game) is a CCS battlecruiser, very standard, just like the Truth and Reconciliation. The Dreadnaught is Truth's personal ship which he uses during the game. On the level The Covenant, High Charity uses the Earth portal to arrive at the Ark. Using the Floods only known landing technique, it crashes in the wasteland beside the activation citadel. Dispersion pods rain down from the ship and damaged the Shadow of Intent. The Halo seen rising from the wasteland is a new replacement, whether named 04, 08, or otherwise. Cortana says at the start of Halo that the ring is 'so new, unfinished'. The ship seen in the background at one point behind the pelican is Forward Unto Dawn, a frigate smaller than a cruiser and destroyer. To answer the OP's question, Cortana doesn't lie. She says in the recording that there is a way to stop the Flood without firing the 'remaining' rings. At the time of the recording, the new ring would not have been finished. My questions are:1. How did High Charity break through the Elite's quarantine? 2. Why did no other Flood ships breach the quarantine? 3. Why did the Elites not follow High Charity like the Infinite Devil Machine? 4. Why did High Charity not bombard Earth with Flood Dispersion Pods?

 • Lots of things cortana says are taken from the books too (but not from her saying it). In The Fall Of Reach various sayings from Dejah and Dr. Halsey mimic/define what Cortana says in the halo games. There is a lot more to halo than most think. I just wish someone with the knowledge would compile it for once and get it stickied.
