The SUPERSOLDIER program derives their CODENAME from the Greek Spartans. But PROJECT ORION aka The SPARTAN I's are not the Greek Spartans. The Greeks are the Spartans. They were created to assassinate rebel leaders & quell civil insurrection with the minimum amount of civilian casualties. The SERIES was in essence a failure as its members were disbanded. However, it was SUCCESSFUL ENOUGH to deem another SPARTAN PROGRAM. You all (should) know about it, so I won‘t go into too many specifics. It was originally created with the same mission as the SPARTAN I‘s, but with the Covenant attack on Harvest, their top priorities shifted by UNSC top brass to a different warfront. The brain children of Colonel Ackerson in an effort to produce a more “disposable” breed of SPARTANS, which while still maintaining their effectiveness, had a relatively small production time and cost. They were all trained by Kurt 051 (Whose named was later changed to LT. Ambrose due to the classified nature of this program as well as his staged death). [i]~SPARTAN III ALPHA COMPANY - The first 300 candidates selected for the SPARTAN III PROGRAM. They were all killed in an attempt to destroy a Covenant Shipyard. [All KIA - OPERATION PROMETHEUS in 2537] ~ SPARTAN III BETA COMPANY - The second batch of candidates selected for the SPARTAN III PROGRAM, fared little better. Most of these soldiers died except for two, Lucy and Tom, who continue to train the next company of Spartan-IIIs, Gamma Company. [Out of the 300 SPARTANS that hit the ground; 9 died during orbital insertion, the rest were killed by Covenant forces, two survived.] ~ SPARTAN III GAMMA COMPANY - The third batch of candidates selected for the SPARTAN III PROGRAM. They were given a mutagen which enabled them to continue to operate even when they are in systemic shock by LT. Ambrose (aka Kurt 051) in an effort to increase their odds of survival. [With the activation of the Sentinel Factory on Planet Onyx, only 15 members of Beta company were currently on Onyx, the rest having been deployed shortly prior. 7 members (Team Gladius) are KIA. 5 (Team Katana) are in stasis within the Micro Dyson Sphere. 3 (Team Saber) are also within the MD Sphere.] ~Delta Company was proposed, and Camp Currahee was being prepared for their arrival when The Battle of Onyx occurred in 2552.
