• Don't get scared people. Bungie was owned by MS, and MS had to let them go independent. Of course it took some money on Bungie's part. I think this was a good will split, you won't be seeing Halo as we know it without Bungie attached. At least not a FPS. MS would -blam!- Halo up, and they know it. Look at the ad campaign haha. We'll probably see a new IP, but the base tech is there for another Halo FPS for the 360. We'll see a new game, and a new Halo before the end of the life for the 360. If they were to make another Halo game they probably wouldn't have split. To me it looks like a move to do what they want, whether or not it's in the Halo universe is yet to be seen. Reading that article, I think that I've been right. They're looking to make a few games at once. It makes sense. Come out with a game every year or two. That would be more viable an option. Have a group still working on Halo projects, and another group working on a new IP. Can't wait to see what it will be. [Edited on 10.09.2007 5:46 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: BAR666 The ignorance concerning business in this thread is disturbing. Raise your hands if you think Bill Gates owns Microsoft (hint: put your hand down, idiot). Unless it is clearly stated otherwise, it's safe to assume that Microsoft owns the Halo universe. But it's obviously in both parties' interests for Bungie to maintain a certain level of involvement in the IP, and independence certainly doesn't prevent this. These things would all have been negotiated during the split and could have gone either way, but since Microsoft owned everything right up to split, they held all the cards and anything Bungie got was basically goodwill on their part.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=29381 "Microsoft presumably just didn't feel that the timing was right to take their flagship franchise to another platform. As the owners of the IP, it will ultimately be their decision if and when they decide..." [Edited on 10.09.2007 5:12 AM PDT]

Microsoft owns Halo now that Bungie and MS have split. Frankie O'Conner said that Microsoft has the rights to Halo, while Bungie still retains the rights to Marathon. • Yes they own Halo. They were the parent company of bungie while they produced the series. Theough luckily there's a "long term publishing agreement" for future games.

 • MS owns the IP. Read the news article again. What this means is that Bungie could not go and make a game call Hola, with the exact same story line and all, but instead of Master Chief, its El Chiefo de Mastero. Click to see what game could not be created edit: If they could clearly establish it as parody a la Raving Rabbids 2, then it could be made, but otherwise its copyright infringement. • When bungie made this game, they where owned by Microsoft. Because Bungie was funded by microsoft, Microsoft owns the rights to Halo 3. However , that dosn't mean Bungie can't make games in the future with the Master Chief, or with the name "Halo". [Edited on 10.07.2007 4:53 PM PDT]

 • I don't really care. The name and characters mean nothing to me. A good game is solely in the hands of the developer. I'd like to see a new Marathon game. I'd love to see some new Intellectual Property come from Bungie...

 •
Posted by: Generalmajora Ok.... here is how it works, if you were to work at say EA games and you make a game and decide you want to branch off EA and make a different company like I don't know "Not EA Games" and you decide you want to publish the game in your own company the rights belong to EA because it was made while you were working for EA
Exactly. All the rights to halo belong to microsoft! Which leads me to ask.....who works on halo3? (Patches, updates etc)

 • That's how it is with F.E.A.R. Vivendi own the name, so Monolith are calling the sequel Project Origin instead.
