I have heard that the MC's realy name (John 117) was linked to a bible verse in some way. I researched this and here's what I found:
John 1:17
-For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
This verse refers to the old testament when God gave the ten commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai, as well as the new testament when Jesus preached about the Lord.
John 11:7
-Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
This verse refers to when Jesus and his apostles (more commonly known as his deciples) were called to Bethany because his close friend (Lazarus) was on his deathbed, yet Jesus did not go because he knew that Lazarus would be risen from the dead.
Here are the next lines in the verse. I think they could possibly resemble something about the Master Chief's great bravery, but I don't know:
-Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?"
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light."
Speculation anyone?

I also have thought that. You should also try first John 17. I can't really remember what it says but its another verse. But if it is linked to the bible, thats pretty cool. Bungie had to do some research on that.
