Halo 3 sound issues.

So, I noticed right after I got my game that the sound on the gunfire and the center channel in particular sounded muffled. So, I asked around. The general forums I hang out at, only one or two people noticed this as well yesterday. However, this was really bothering me. Tonight, I google'd to see if other people had noticed this yet and I found this. Gamespot forum thread full of people with the problem Now, it seems to be a 5.1 issue. And as mentioned in that thread, ANYTHING is louder than your gunfire. Footsteps, combat dialogue 10 feet away. Its horrible and breaks immersion. Now, no reviews have mentioned this and I refuse to believe this was how Bungie intentioned the sound mix in the game to be. Especially after watching the Extras disc and seeing the section on Audio. They showed a scene with different sound layers over it, and the weapons fire was quite clear, loud and sharp. A very, very noticeable difference from what my game experience is. So, is this common around here too? And whats the deal here? Is it intentional (I hope not), a 5.1 bug, a general sound mix bug, etc.....

 • Hi, I don't normally post in game forums, but this issue has made me search the bungie website for this issue. The issue I'm having is that the volume of the assault rifle MA5C ICWS is extremely low. I noticed the problem during the 1st fire fight, but afterwards went to a quiet area in the game (ie near the beginning of the level) & fired the assault rifle there - still sounded way too quiet. This was my favourite weapon in the original game (which looks like it's going to remain the best in my eyes), but it sounds way too muffled now - I can't enjoy using the assault rifle at all (& seeing as this is my favourite weapon it's a big deal to me). FYI, the pistol sounded fine, (but still could've been louder), I haven't tried the other weapons yet. My system is an XB360 connected to HDMI TV via HDMI cable (3 cables for video: blue, green+red; 2 RCA for audio: white+red). I play with either Yamaha 2.1 speakers, or high quality headphones (Audio Technica ATH910Pro) & my XBox is set to the correct setting of Digital Stereo. I don't have sound issues with any of my other XB360 games. I'll be trading halo3 for Half-Life 2: The Orange Box, as having read this thread, it really looks like Bungie don't care about the fact the game's assault rifle sounds way too quiet. If they (Bungie) eventually fix it, (which I doubt), I will buy the game back 2nd hand, but they're not getting my money twice. Hopefully Bungie will reply to their other loyal customers soon (just don't hold your breath waiting for it guys! ;) )

 • I really don't want this to die - I just started online cop-op with my bro on legendary, and I'm still hoping for a sound fix. Why does bungie not respond to this? This is clearly a legitimate issue. Bungie, please let us know that this is a known issue, and (hopefully) there is a fix coming! thanks!

 • Another weekly update and another non-mention of this. I guess we can just take it that this was on purpose and they have no intention of implementing something to make those of us that think its horrible happy. I really can't believe that one of the biggest games of the year can have something this glaring show up an it was a non-issue to reviewers and (apparently) Bungie. Oh well, guess it's just time to let this thread die then, huh?

 • Ok, I have a similar problem with my own audio over an unusual setup...my TV's built-in speaker had an accident quite a few years ago and is broken. Instead, I use a pair of computer speakers jacked into the headset port on my TV and this setup works just fine with nearly everything ever. Except for two games played over my 360: Halo 2 and Halo 3. My problem is NOT the guns though, they sound just fine, my problem is that if something is happening directly behind me I cannot hear it. At all. It doesn't matter what it is: dialog, vehicles, guns, explosions, environmental effects are all muted if they are more than a couple in-game steps behind me...has anyone else had this? It ONLY does this with Halo 3 *and* 2, however 2's audio is perfectly fine when played over my old xbox system...any ideas or suggestions, it's frustrating me to death that I miss what dialog is going on behind me in campaign and when someone is sneaking up behind me to melee me in multiplayer.

 • So nice to see that this has gotten some sort of response, or even acknowledgment from Bungie. "The best way to play Halo 3 is in a nice dark room with an HDTV and 5.1 Surround Sound" Oh really, Bungie? I have a beautiful sound system that is wasted when I use it with Halo 3. I turn the thing off and just use my TV's speakers. I'd rather not hear my paintball gun-sounding assault rifle blasted over my Home Theater. Its a shame too, its not the sound/music/voice that sucks. Just the absurd mixing levels and lack of center channel.

 • OK, I just personally experience Halo 3 on my friend's 6.1 audio system. We fired Halo 3 up on his system and I started playing from one of his saved points on a level I have yet to play. I immediately noticed that the guns were again very weak sounding. Grenades sounded only slightly better. The dialog and music was WAY too loud in comparison. I noticed another thing this time too. The gun sounds are muted even further when you receive dialog from Sgt. Johnson or Miranda Keyes over your "helmet" radio. Their dialog seems to me to be the only use of the center channel speaker. The rest of the time I played, my friend sat near the center channel and reported that there was no sound coming from it. Previously, my friend has said he didn't think the sound was too bad. Today, he admits that it the guns are pretty weak. To me, this problem appears to be universal no matter what 360 or audio system is used. I stand by my earlier opinion that the sound mix is awful. Bungie should make a patch to add individual volume controls so players can balance the sound to their own liking. I will likely keep the game just to play online multi-player, something Bungie does do well. In the meantime, I hope they come up with a fix of some sort for the sound.

 • Yes, I'd love for DJ to post back his results. I PMed him as well. The above solution also fixes my stuttering video and audio in the intro video to Looney Toons demo, so it is NOT just a Halo specific problem. Happens across two gamertags, two 360s, and two HDs, and the solution is the same. Sign in from the MU, you can leave HD attached.

 •
Posted by: DJ Dioxin I am quite disappointed in Halo3 in general. I was never a huge fan of the campaign mode in any of the games, but I really got into the matchmaking in Halo2. I got on the forums today to see if anyone else shared in my disappointment to find tons of negative threads. When I saw this, it made me realize how bad the sound is in the game. I have 5.1 surround and definitely feel that there should be sound options to change the level of BGM, voices and SFX. However, I figured this forum was for something different. Here is my main issue with my sound: I am experiencing complete sound loss when engaging in major fire fights. Anyone else have this problem?
DJ, YES!! I was also experiencing sound loss in major fire fights! Glad I'm not the only one! I found a solution though! Take your gamer profile and move it to a memory unit, and log in from there instead of the HD. You can leave the HD attached and still save to it. Do this, and report back! I bet it will fix your problem as it fixed mine totally! Weird, but it works! [Edited on 10.08.2007 12:44 PM PDT]

 • Search duardo and you'll find it. I don't think that guy is affiliated with Bungie though looks like just some random posting advice ... Doubting the sound will ever be fixed, whatta joke.

 •
Posted by: The Smithlord I watched the DVD of "Next" on my system last night. Guess what? It sounded great, just like I expected. Why does Halo 3 sound so bad? I want Bungie to at least acknowledge there is an issue. They can't just dismiss it as a set up issue on our part. They should give us more credit than that. Don't they think we're capable of setting up our own theater systems? If it's not our setups and it's not the game, that means it's the XBOX 360 itself. What would be different with ours compared to those not having the sound problem?
I've played on three different 360's (1 rlod, 1 dvd drive died, and a replacement) and all sound exactly the same. Switching from 5.1 to stereo doesn't fix the problem of weak gun sounds either. Definitely a mixing issue. Bungie will most likely ignore the entire issue or call the lot of us idiots with misconfigured systems. Bungie can't seem to own up to a mistake and work on fixing it. They continually berate and belittle those who voice legitimate concerns (hardcore playlist, 640p issue, marketing and game play completely different, etc.) After i get home tonight i'm going to take an spl reading of some of the weapons in halo 2 and then pop in halo 3 and see what i get. I know there should be some difference, but it should be relatively small.

 • Thanks everyone, for keeping up with this thread - I finished the campaign today. Still terribly disappointed with the sound, and even more disappointed that Bungie has ignored this issue. I plan to play again on legendary co-op with my brother, and I hope this issue is resolved before then. Bungie please respond!

 • I sent the game home with a friend for him to give it a try. He reports "...I tried it and don't think the sound is too bad..." This isn't exactly a glowing review in my opinion. I will get further clarification from him tomorrow as he texted me over Live and didn't go into detail. He is somewhat of a Halo fanboy, so maybe he's just trying to overlook the issue. I plan to give it a listen myself on his system and report my findings here. I watched the DVD of "Next" on my system last night. Guess what? It sounded great, just like I expected. What would be different with ours compared to those not having the sound problem? Luckily, my friend hasn't opened his Halo 3 yet since he has mine. If I find the sound quality is poor on his system, then he'll keep my game and I'll send his unopened one back for a refund. It shouldn't have to be that way. What's up with that Bungie?

 • Couldn't agree more. At least in multiplayer you can crank the volume enough that its not as noticeable but yeah WTF are they thinking with sound mixing in campaign it is honestly laughable.

 • I am extremely disappointed that Bungie seems to be ignoring this issue. They are talented people and have made some great games. However, Halo 3's sound is obviously botched. They owe it to those of us who have invested a large sum of money in a 360 and a good home theater system to fix the sound mix. What good is so-called "5.1 sound" if 2.0 of it is broken? Their explanation is inadequate. They aren't deaf and I KNOW they have good enough equipment to hear it. If they want to make the guns sounds come out of the L and R speakers, that's cool with me as long as it sounds good. It doesn't! The mix between guns, music and dialog is WAY off. The addition of individual volume controls would be nice, but right now I'd be happy if they just remixed it correctly. They could make the update optional just in case there are people who want to keep the "puny guns" mix we have now. Bungie please act fast! My tolerance for these weak guns is wearing thin and there are so many other games to play ( Bioshock and Call of Duty to name a couple). Master Chief deserves awesome sounding guns, not a Daisy Red Ryder.

 • I just don't understand why they didn't include any options to adjust the audio levels in game. Just about every other game has this ability. And so for no luck in the weekly update. Hopefully it gets mentioned before the day's over.

 • They aren't using the center channel for guns. I'm ok with that. They really shouldn't anyways. And it makes more sense that their is channel sepration when duel wielding. That's cool too. What' I'm NOT cool with is that the actual SOUND LEVELS of the guns PERIOD. I don't care that their coming from the front two channels. But even still they're horribly muffled / under driven. And my theatre is PERFECTLY setup. There isn't a damn thing wrong with my speaker levels or gains, or it's ability to reproduce audio exactly as intended. The sound mixing is BROKE. Period. They need to have an option to change your own gains.. so you can hike up the gun noise, or fix the default mixing. Guns sound weak/underpowered compared to other effects, etc. It's like the frequency range they use is limited and producing a muffled effect.
