Halo 3 JAGGIES!?! WTF

I swear, I was reading reviews and it said that Halo 3 had literally no jaggies, but when I popped my Halo 3 in the 360 and played campaign, jaggies are EVERYWHERE!!! Im playing on a HDTV on 720p, but it still doesnt get rid of them. I thought Bungie would fix this!!!

 • halo 3 doesnt have anti aliasing, when you take screenshots in theater, it turns AA on just for that shot.

 • I believe there are jaggies because the 360 cant process HDR lighting and antialiasing at the same time... so basically Bungie chose to use A LOT of HDR lighting but therefore will have to sacrifice antialiasing...

 • Ok, i've got as 32 inch (81 cm) HD READY tv on 1080i and i've got tons of jaggies. If you have a HD READY tv with NO jaggies, explain exactly what your tv is like please. NOT FULL HD. HD READY tv. As far i know, Halo 3 is build for VERY BIG full HD tv's because: At the HALO 3 PREMIERES where people wtached the Halo 3 campaihn for the first time, it looked very good on a THEATHER SCREEN. With NO jaggies at al. Btw. if you turn your sharpness down on your tv, it look al vage and stuff, not really HD anymore... :( help me out here. [Edited on 11.05.2007 11:33 AM PST]

 • I just turned my TV's sharpness all the way down. It made a pretty good difference, though there were still some jaggies.

 • Sorry to the guy who said tv size doesnt make a difference, your obviously someone who doesnt have much experience with large size tvs. As most people should know by know halo 3 is NOT HI DEF as such. This means that the console DOES have to upscale to fit the screen and the larger the screen.............. Its blatantly obvious especially when the game is trying to `emulate` a 1080p feed! •
Posted by: uRe FaT mOm 1) Jaggies are more apparant in HD because theres ALOT more detail 2) JAggies fade away if u sit at the correct viewing distance. 3) Reduce the sharpness on ure TV this can sometimes create more jaggies than there shud be I sit about 2-3 ft from my 26" samsung, Yeh theres jaggies but when i sit 6-9 feet there literally gone or faded.
EXACTLY! I noticed a lot of complaints from people with large screen HD TVs with native 1080p resolution. You have to sit at least 6 to 7 feet away from a TV that size at that resolution for the HD image to be properly processed by your brain. And the sharpness is a real issue, not all images are meant to be super sharp. You have to take that into consideration. I have a 26" Westinghouse LCD HD TV with a native 720p resolution that I use for my computer / gaming monitor. I sit at a desk with my eyes about 3 1/2 to 4 feet from the screen. The picture is AWESOME when playing Halo 3. NO JAGGIES!! Only one problem. Objects in the extreme distance aren't "fleshed out" properly (they look kinda like a honeycomb) and, it is only certain objects. My guess is that it is my TV's fault not the games. Edit: Are you checking the setting switch on you 360 cable? Some of the individuals with jaggies may have that set wrong. [Edited on 11.05.2007 9:12 AM PST]

 • For those of you who've posted those Jaggy filled pics... I sincerely feel for you. However, that is most definitely not how the game looks on my set up, for which I am very thankful. That crap looks terrible.

 •
Posted by: I Naku I
Posted by: sneezymarble There's just no getting around it. Halo 3 may be fun to play but it's the ugliest 360 game I own hands down.
This is true. And it makes me sad that it's true.
It's a delight to see a devout proponent of Halo such as yourself speak sense... When serious Halo fans honor honesty, and acknowledge that a certain aspect of their beloved game is flawed, it gives me hope. [Edited on 11.05.2007 8:52 AM PST]

 • I was originally playing on a standard def tv with no jaggies. I bumped up to a 720p LCD tv and they were everywhere. I don't understand it either.

 •
Posted by: Verty3
Posted by: Sdrawkcab Eman
Posted by: Verty3 It seems weird that different people are getting different results. Seeing it played on my mates normal non high def TV seemed to look a lot better than my LCD.
Standard definition TV's aren't clear enough to see the jaggies. Can you post a screenshot of more of the screen? You also said it was at 1280x1024. I remember seeing some people complaining that 1280x1024 looked like it was 640x480 upscaled.
Yeah it pretty much looks like 640X480. For comparison sake here is 2 screenshots i just took. One is from Halflife 2 running at 1280x1024 with 4xAA and the other is Halo 3 (supposedly) running at 1280x1024: Half life 2: http://www.imagehosting.com/show.php/1189770_halflife2.JPG.html Halo 3: http://www.imagehosting.com/show.php/1189782_halo3.JPG.html This shots were taken on the exact same monitor about 5 minutes ago. I'll upload an entire screen for you now.
UUUUUUhhhhh!!!!! Blasphamy! That's Half-Life 2 Episode 1! Not Half-Life 2! How dare you sir!

 • I'm on Standard Def, with a Standard Def television. Jaggies EVERYWHERE. In fact, I've never seen a game with jaggies so apparent. It's a SEVERE problem with THIS game. [Edited on 11.05.2007 8:44 AM PST]

 •
Posted by: RBH The people who cannot see jaggies you are wrong.
Thanks, but I'd still rather go by the nerve impulses that are sent between my own eyes and my brain.
There ARE jaggies although this doesnt detract from the game.
Of course there are jaggies, but I think a lot of people are trying to say that to them it's not as bad as some people make it out to be.
Dont believe me? go out buy one and then see for yourselves.
No thanks, I'm good on my 32'' hi-def tv with almost no jaggies.
...graphics are quite poor sorry
Entirely subjective, so don't pawn it off as otherwise.

 •
Posted by: RBH The people who cannot see jaggies you are wrong. There ARE jaggies although this doesnt detract from the game. If some of you people actually kept up with Bungies press releases you will have seen that Halo 3 Is actually UPSCALED and is NOT a true hi def game hence why you see jaggies on certain parts of the game. People who have 32 inch tvs see a lot LESS jaggies than people using a 62 inch, this is because the image has to be blown up that much larger. this game looks BETTER on a standard res tv than it does on a large hi def tv simply because this is NOT a true hi def game and the larger your hd set the more notiecable it becomes. Half the people commenting on this thread dont even HAVE a hi def telly so dont really have a right to comment. Im telling you now that H3 has bad jaggies when blown up to 1080p on a 62 inch set. Dont believe me? go out buy one and then see for yourselves. But I shouldnt really have to tell some of you this since bungie has already admitted that the game UPSCALES to a 720 p or 1080 p resolution. Game is great, fantastic even (playability wise) graphics are quite poor sorry
The size i feel, is irrelevant, i play on a 19" widescreen in 720p, i think it's because halo 3 plays at 480p (using 2 pixel buffers (better shades) 640p (instead of 720p, but still using the 2 pixel buffers) or 1080p (higher resolution but only 1 pixel buffer). Bungie went over this in a weekly update about a month ago. This 640p is why there are more noticeable jaggies on 720p displays.

 •
Posted by: YLEIS hmm some jaggies but if you can't play game because of them, you're fool. Game's great, few jaggies don't matter. Look at the game's lighting, it's very good.
Agreed, I mean obviously most games will have very slight jag-ing on some edges but it's not as bad as most people claim. Most of the time I don't see any on my 32'' inch hi-def tv using a 720p signal.

 •
Posted by: Humans Finest My friend has a 50 inch plasma screen HDTV. He runs his halo 3 at 1080i and it looks amazing. Are you sure you have everything for your tv. my friend had to get a certain cord so his cable would be clear, and since you got it, everything has been looking beautiful
never ever run your game in 1080i. it is good for looking at pictures, but horrible for video and anything involving movement. 720p is more suitable for games and videos.

 • Well I was really impressed with the game at first, using my 26" SD TV, switched to a 32" HD running 1080i and also tried 720p, jaggies are everywhere. I thought it may have just been my TV, so tried it on the 46" samsung we have downstairs, running at 1080p and it is even worse. Thing is my mate has his running on a 40" at 1080p and his is perfect, one of the other lads is running on a 50" 1080p and nothing, perfect graphics. Ah well back to my SD TV i think.
