HDTV Splitscreen problem! 4:3 Aspect ratio??!?!?!

As some of you know, I recieved my Halo 3 copy today from the Pontiac contest. I have been playing campaign fine by myself for about an hour. My brother just got here and we went in to do some splitscreen co-op campaign, and bam... Theres black bars on the left and right side of the screen! I tried going through every setting, reading the manual, checked my Xbox360 settings but it wont change! Any suggestions (or anyone else with their copy confirm this issue?) Thanks.

 • I hate the black bars too. Why do I care what the aspect ratio is. Just use the whole width of the screen! I understand Bungie's thinking on this, but it should have been an option we could choose between. I hope they can provide this option in a future patch. Did you hear me Bungie?! A PATCH I SAID!!

 • Let's also make clear that it is not only GOW that managed to get it correct (no matter what Bungie is claiming in their design) The list of games that fill my wide screen 57" display in split screen! on the Xbox 360 and on the PS3 is long and distinguished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No black bars, no black bars, no black bars!!!!!!!!

 • Great game but extremely retarded co-op, I just wanted to put my vote in for an immediate fix that gives choice. Simply telling us to deal with subpar experience is unacceptable and it's our right as consumers to be upset about it, no matter what some in this thread think.

 • OK....first FAQ they get a pass.....but their needs to be more of an answer soon. The confirming what we already KNEW last night, that this IS AN ON PURPOSE DESIGN, didn't do anything for anyone. Obviously people would like the option, that way everyone can be happy..............er [Edited on 09.27.2007 10:52 AM PDT]

 • Say what you like the point is it's not True to what it says it is. What it needs to say on the back cover is 1080p at times.

 • I dont like vertical split, but I sure would take it over this. Still it seems that bungie made up its mind by giving one cocky response. Way to go Bungie, I really looked forward to playing this coop splitscreen with my friends, now you just wasted hours of fun for me. Learn2make games, look at a company called Epic.

 • That's what I don't understand, though--why is it like this in local co-op? Are they afraid of giving humans an advantage over Brutes?

 • They wanted to make it fair for everyone. However, I prefer vertical split over this. I wish you could just have the option.

 • I really don't understand why Bungie went with this decision. It seems pretty lame to me. If they were worried about advantages (in co-op, of all places) due to FOV, why can I play widescreen multiplayer over Xbox Live? edit: Wait. I think I understand. Still, no vertical splitscreen in co-op bugs me. I wish it would work in co-op, but I can understand why it's the way it is in multiplayer. [Edited on 09.27.2007 9:37 AM PDT]

 • I have a 52" WS HDTV and I'm not happy at all with this. That is how for the most part the game is played here. GoW had no trouble it's called FOV. So what if it gives slight advantage. It will be true to what you said the game is on the back of the cover point blank. It don't say 1080i/p at times does it no it says 1080i/p.

I really don't know, but if the single players don't get letterboxed to maintain the aspect ratio designed by Bungie...then how about a little consistency? If they do get letterboxed, my bad, I take it back.
I thought what happened is for 4:3 ratio, games only render less of the image (that's to say without the extra side space that widescreen users see) but maintain the same proportion to the scene rendering. Eh a little harder to explain without going into the technicality of things.
Going from 16:9 to 4:3, there is almost certainly a loss of field of view. Regardless of how much is rendered. The sides are cut-off, plain and simple. To maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio, it would have to be letterboxed. If it is not letterboxed, then its 4:3. I don't think that rendering outside of the field of view matters.

 • Just like many others, I want to start of by saying that I love the game. I just beat the campaign and I really feel like I have barely scratched the surface of play time. So in that aspect, Bungie has completely vanquished all. This aspect ratio nonsense is not really a deal breaker for me, but I do agree that we as consumers have a right to speak up and let Bungie know that this design(flaw) is annoying. This is a community forum, after all. Open discussions and debates are welcome. I know I'm not alone, but I bought a big TV mainly for the ability to play Halo 3 in enormous HD glory. And that's awesome when my broke-ass roommate is at work or in class... but when he's home and whining about getting in some time on the box, that bastard, not only do I have to give up precious space on my couch, but also on my screen. That's when the picture shrinks, I have to get off my lazy ass and sit on the floor in front of the TV just so I can shoot those damn tiny ass flood, crawling, infesting thingies. Even with 42" I have to scoot the -blam!- up. I recognize that Bungie didn't want to distort their desired aspect ratio for either player. And I prefer this setting to the vertical split from Halo 2... but even with that said, I would still massively appreciate the option to expand the screen to fill up my new HD investment (the possibility of burn-in, btw, not too exciting). SIDEBAR: desired aspect ratio, right? by design? What about all those people with 4:3 TVs? Do they get letterboxed? •
Posted by: Likwit
Posted by: Pwnocchio I guess thought this was America.
That reminded me of the Southpark episode where the kids have their summer baseball games and they're trying to lose on purpose. And Stan's dad just goes around fighting dads from the opposing team. As he's being hauled away by the cops every single time he was like, "Huh, what, I thought this was America." Anyway the developers have their own opinion of what feels better. Just as the rest of the community does as is apparent by this thread. It's like trying to proof something by using the proof being used against you. It is indeed a subjective thing and the developers have made a decision based on their subjective, albeit professional, decision.

 •
Posted by: Pwnocchio Good lord, just deal with it. They have a right to display the game the way they want. Besides, they are the game developers, and they would know better whether a certain FOV or aspect ratio felt "right" or "wrong". And if you want to say "but this is how WE want to view it", that just confirms that a LOT of people would play it with screwed up settings just to not have "black bars". As a developer, why would you give people the tools to play your game like that? Then you would have people coming on and saying "it looks all stretched when I play with split screen" or "why does it feel weird on split screen". There's no win/win here. When you spend this much time on a game, you want to control the way people view it, otherwise, the experience is flawed. And from the sounds of whiners, you guys will play it flawed and screwed up just to fill up the whole screen. How does that make sense? Quit whining and get over it. And if it's a deal breaker for you, send the game back.
Why don't you get off our dicks? The black bars bother me and the stretching doesn't look bad, It didn't for Halo 2 in 480p. And how the hell would the developer know what feels better? I thought that was a subjective thing. I guess thought this was America. [Edited on 09.27.2007 8:23 AM PDT]

 • I have to say when I started up a co-op campaign Tuesday night I was completely in shock. I could not believe that Halo 2 on the original Xbox was easier on my eyes and used my hdtv screen area more efficiently than Halo 3. First of all let me say I understand the BS reasoning that you guys are "preserving the ratio" of 16:9. HOWEVER, you are first assuming that everyone prefers a horizontal split screen to a vertial one, and secondly ignoring the fact that you are taking away 20% of the screen area and in effect lowering the visual quality of the game. I have a 65" DLP and the fact that I have to sit six goddam feet away to play splitscreen co-op is just completely and absolutely ridiculous. If you guys are going to insist on this cropped screen ratio preservation BS at LEAST put in a patch to give us the option for vertical splitscreen. Thanks.

With this sort of reply in this thread, just proves that you haven't bothered reading alot of posts.

 •
Posted by: Likwit Would turning my resolution down to 480p solve this problem?
Yes it would, but then you will not get the enjoyment of HD. Something that this game is supposed to run with. In my opinion, a quick fix that isn't viable in any way or form.

 •
Posted by: Achronos In split screen, the game maintains aspect ratio and viewport first. The alternatives were vertical split or altering the viewport (both distort the view). Both of those solutions suck. It isn't "Unforgivable." It is the best solution to the problem. The alternatives have poor visual quality and don't meet our standards. It isn't a matter of "figuring it out" it is a matter of having a set specification for how we want you to see the world in the game, and sticking to it. So, not a bug. By design.
Posted by: tetzloff i am not trying to be a jerk. i just spent 70 something dollars on a game that isnt in 16x9 when there are no hardware limitations. halo3 xbox 360 and everything. and the above post reply was a scapegoat answer. should we not expect the game to be cutting edge (which 16x9 is not) or at least "EQUAL" to every other multiplayer game on the system. i think so.. i dont have a small screen.. my plasma is 42". how do you explain gears of war being in full 16x9, they were obviously able to figure it out? this problem exists on halo3 and if left unfixed is unforgivable. if anyone does have any links to any confirmation by bungie on this (past or present articles) I would certainly entertain them.. thanks in advance.

I think people understand the resoning behind it, but it still sucks. I can't play splitscreen. My TVs not that big in the first place and losing 25 percent of my screen isn't at all helpfull. Would turning my resolution down to 480p solve this problem?

 • Bungie needs to make it a choice for the user even if it is not the correct 16X9. Gears Of War and other games on the 360 look fine with the split top and bottom and fill the entire screen all the way. I want Halo3 to look the same. Please give us the option in a patch to choose to fill the screen my 57" HD wide screen will thank you, My Epson XGA projector will thank you! Many people will thank you! black bars suck!

 • It's definitly an hot topic. On this Forum and on Many other Forum around the Net and this only One day after .... I totally understand technical choice and that Bungie do it thinking that will be better for game experience etc.... But it seems that is not satified everybody. I was really exited yesterday running Halo3 and play with my wife to shoot covenant. But today I'm really sad about experience. The bungie choice give me headache ... My question today is do I need to wait fix from Bungie Does this fix will never came and let me think that Halo and Halo 1 was better that Halo 3 and make me hesitate to buy Halo 4 in some year ??? Regarding actual reponse mentioned by Dagie .... I'm a bit pessimist But if this topic continue to grow like that maybe Bungie react and stop discontentment and let everybody continue to think that HAlo 3 is really the best game they ever play.
