OK, so by now you've seen Marathon on the XBLArcade, and maybe you're thinking, what else has Bungie made that's up to that caliber of awesome?
One of the answers is the Myth series.
Myth is a Real Time Tactical game, set in an age of high fantasy. Currently, a small portion of hardcore players populate PlayMyth and Mariusnet, but we could always use more. PlayMyth is currently not accepting members and it's future looks bleak, but Mariusnet is open and friendly. So get into the game and start a Dorf Riot.
You can find demos of Myth on Project Magma:
Demo for Mac
Demo for Windows
Try them out.
When you're ready, purchase the full version, availiable at a few online retailers.
Windows Installation
Get out your Myth II disc.
Insert your Myth II disc into the drive. It should autorun and bring up a menu. If you are running Windows 95, 98 or ME, you can click INSTALL. If you are running anything newer, then EXIT this menu.
Open up "My Computer" .
Find your CD drive, it should be labeled as MYTH II if the disc is in. Right Click and go to EXPLORE.
Right Click on the Autoplay File. Select Properties. Select the Coimpatibility Tab and select Windows 95. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Now you can simply eject and reinsert the disc and Install from the menu.
This will install all the Myth II files you select to your hard disk. Select a full install, the games not extravagantly huge and this will ensure the most options and compatibility with other players.

If you're on Windows 95, 98 or ME:
Download the 1.6 patch from Project Magma and run the patcher.
Then just select Myth II from the start menu and play.
For newer versions of Windows, open up your Myth II folder, This is usually located at
C:\Program Files\Myth II
Right Click the Myth II executable file. You may want to change your folder view to "Details" to clarify which file you're looking for.
Select Properties, and change the compatibility to Windows 95 like you did for the Autoplay file above in the tutorial.
You may need to do this for the Shortcut in your Start menu as well.
Download the 1.6 patch from Project Magma and run the patcher.
Enjoy.
Linux Installation
Note: There is a Linux version of Myth II, but we will not be going into the details of that installation here. The reason for this is that while it works great, the source code has been lost and therefore there will be no further patches for the game. To play on Mariusnet, we need at least patch 1.5.1 and it's best if we have patch 1.6. Therefore this will concentrate on getting Myth II to run in Wine.
This guide will assume you have Wine installed. With Gnome or XFCE, you can access the Synaptic Package Manager and do a search for Wine to install it if you haven't previously.
This is a GUI installation in the interest of simplicity.
Insert your Myth II: Soulblighter for Windows disc. Right click on the Autoplay icon in your file manager when the disc opens. Select "Run With Application" (It may be worded slightly differently depending on which GUI you're using) if Wine is in the list, select it here, otherwise browse for the application. Wine will be located in /usr/bin. Select Wine then run the Autoplay.exe file.
Select Install and do the large install.
Download the 1.6 patch from The Tain, found in Sardonic's downloads post.
Right click the patcher once you have it downloaded and follow the same procedure written above to run it under Wine.
Choose the classic installation. Windowed mode may create issues with available RAM. After the patcher has run, open a terminal and type in

Go to audio and select ALSA output, making sure everything else is deselected. Go to Applications and browse for MythII.exe . It should be in /home/*yourname*/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Myth II/ . Select Myth II.exe. In the Windows dropdown menu select Windows 98.
To add plugins, download the plugin and open it with your archiving program. Extract the plugin to /home/*yourname*/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Myth II/plugins
You should now have a working copy of Myth II on your Linux system. To run the game, open up a file manager and go to /home/*yourname*/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Myth II , and open Myth II with Wine.
Some GUIs will have a Wine section in the applications menu, and have a link to Myth II there.
Troubleshooting
I've tried installing and I cannot get it to finish the install, or the install hangs.(Windows)
Make sure you've selected Windows 95 compatibility mode for the autorun file on the disc. Myth II was written before most of these newer versions of Windows and they do not really speak quite the same language, so you must trick the game into thinking it's on an OS it knows.
I have no sound in Wine
Enable ALSA support and disable OSS support in winecfg, Do not use DirectSound.
OK, I have everything installed and all, but I can't get online to play! What's going on?
If you've installed the 1.6 patch, you should be set the server to Mariusnet. simply use guest as a login name and whatever the hell you want as a password.
I hope everyone found this guide useful, and I hope to see you all online sometime! I am looking for someone to write a Mac OSX install guide, and if someone does I would like permission to post those instructions in For Carnage Apply Within, a Marathon/Myth group. Check the link in the sig for more information about that.

I haven't experienced this personally, and I currently run it on an AMD with 2 GB of RAM, I know XP doesn't take up all that much, so I'd suspect your issue is caused by something else. Still, if it works for you, it works for you. Are you running the latest patch? Grab patch 1.6 from The Tain.

Great guide for an awesome game. Just one thing I think you're missing under the troubleshooting section: after having successfully installing it,(Windows) attempting to run it causes an error similar to "not enough RAM available, please close other programs and try again." assuming you really do have enough RAM(32MB) then the error is actually caused by having too much available RAM.(I'm guessing 512+ or so) This can be fixed by soaking some of that up by running other programs, MS Paint works well, just keep opening up instances of it until Myth works. I have had this problem, and have heard many other cases as well, so it's probably a good idea to add to this guide.

It's a great game. Hope to see you on Mariusnet.

Awesome, thanks for posting that. I just ordered the entire Myth series a few days ago, so I guess I'll be playing the demos until the games get here.
