Ok I would like to hear an explanation from Bungie's UI designer, of why the crosshair is located below the center of the screen, and why they changed this for Halo 2 and 3.
And why there has been almost no complaints about it. And if your opinion is "it doesn't bother me", don't post that, because logically you woudn't be bothered by it in the center.
If someone has a good reason to justify this, please post, as I have yet to find one, other than it being annoying. And saying "because thats how it was in Halo 2" isn't an awnser either, I want to know why this was done originally.
Example of the situation. Here is a picture of what I'm taking about to the people who didn't "Notice" it.

Also, its not because of the gun pointing there, the guns are modeled to point at the crosshair, not the other way around. Bungie originally had the AR model pointing to the middle of the screen.
http://img481.imageshack.us/my.php?image=crosshairmiddlelo8.jpg
I now intend to keep this thread going until I either get a response from Bungie, on why the crosshair is there, or the shear quantity of some of you posting immature responses gets this thread locked.
Another thing, I love Halo, I'm NOT trying to hurt it in any way. This is about Constructive Criticism.
EDIT: Ok since this topic got ressurected, I might aswell throw up another example of a situation where having the crosshair in the middle is more natural.
http://media.1up.com/media?id=3379465&type=lg
Now look at the brute on the ledge there, and note everything gonig on below him. Now if you where playing the game, you naturally look towards the center of the screen, so you see the brute directly in the middle. Now imagine there is also a few more enemies comming up that space between the 2 rocks at the bottom of your screen.
Let's say you pull out your BR and try to headshot the Brute. If it was in the middle, your already seeing what you would see if you where to shoot him right away.
But since your crosshair is lower now, you have to look up even more, seeing more jungle top, and less below you, and could potentially miss any enemies sneaking up that pass.
Another example, http://www.1up.com/do/slideshow?pager.offset=0&mt=0&cId=3144308&mId=3379464
Heres the scenario, you just came around a rock and came face to face with this baddy, now with the crooshair in the middle, your already at perfect headshot level, and he dies. But with the current crosshair level ,your just slightly below headhsot level, and have to quickly look up, potentially dieing.
2 examples where it is more natural to have the crosshair, where you naturally look, the center of the screen.
Besdies the real reason I thought of is the melee lunge. Now that the game makes your melees hit for you, if your crosshair was at an upwards angle, you would fly upwards when you hit B to melee, potentially flying off the enemy. Now that your gun, and your aimer are at perfect level, you auto melee straight instead of at an upwards level.
Yet again another problem caused by the melee lunge system. So far its killed fall damage(melee lunging with fall damage caused death), and now centered crosshairs.
And another thing, if all you guys hate centered crosshairs, then why in third person do you have the crosshair, in dead center. All your reasoning to prove why being below center should therefore be even more applicable to why it should be below center for third person, especially since you see more masterchief, and less sky with it in the middle.
This next part is for all you "realism" lovers.
In real life, when you want to shoot something, you look at it with the "center" of your vision. You then adjust your gun, so that it hits your target. You don't find something in the center of your vision, then move your whole body up so your guns barrel is aligned to the target, yet your center of vision is 5 feet above where your target is.
Another thing, when you shoulder a gun, you point it at an upwards angle(varying degree to where your target is) and you align it to your center of vision.
Now heres my realism argument to all you guys. This is to everyone who say "zomg you dont hold the gun right next to your head"
Well this is for you. Explain to me then, how the masterchief can see his shoulder stock in first person. http://www.bungie.net/images/Games/Halo3/Screenshots/H3_E307_FP01.jpg
That would mean the gun, is right next to his head. And all of you are saying its not, are therefor immediatly wrong. The more realistic view of a shouldered weapon is this. http://www.emunova.net/img/tests/938.jpg.
Because, your head is actually above your shoulders.
Now I'll explain this for you, the reason Masterchief can see his shoulder stock IS becasue his gun is right next to his head. http://www.bungie.net/images/Games/Halo3/Screenshots/H3_E307_FP01.jpg
And therefor, he does have the gun next to his head, and therefor your argument that the crosshair can't be in the middle of his vision because the gun isn't next to his head is mute.
Normal people in real life, look at what there going to shoot, and then adjust the gun accordingly. Unless theres some of you here that actually look above your target while aiming with your lower peripheral vision.
And just to add again to all those people who think I'm a Halo hater, I'm probably 5 times the fanboy they are, combined. I care so much, that I will pick at every little detail(you name it, I've mentioned it), because I'm a perfectionist.
And again, this mainly goes out to Bungie, simply asking as to why, this "design choice", was made, and how in there eyes, it benefits the game.

noobs get over it

GET THE -blam!- OVER IT !!! I cant notice it at all and bungie probobly has a reason to do it, its not like they said lets just -blam!- with the kids to see who gets annoyed. oh and thrasher ur a noob, quit whinig u only played 101 games [Edited on 08.28.2007 5:40 PM PDT]

Jesus jumped up Christ, this topic has gone on 46 more pages than necessary. The crosshair is slightly below the center. It hardly affects the game at all. If you don't like it, don't play the game. /topic [Edited on 08.28.2007 5:37 PM PDT]

alot of you seem to complain about a "revived" topic yet alot of the same also complain when a new topic is created regarding the same problem then go on to say "use the search feature". which i have done. Furthermore the majority (not unlike the community i so often did see online.) offer nothing but degradation and insults rather then constructive criticism.
-
for the guy who made this topic.... the "circle" is in the middle from the bottom of the screen up to the upper-hud. so, yeah....woohoo
-
Bungie does what they want because they are true cowboys who sail the seven seas.
-
After months of reading and participating in Bungie forum discussion, I now believe in de-evolution.
-
Let this thread die already, its getting annoying seeing people complain for the same thing over and over again! [Edited on 08.28.2007 5:10 PM PDT]

If something as minuscule as a crosshair bothered you so much that you refused to play the game, then I pity you.
-
Posted by: II SHAKEN II you stopped playing Halo 2 because of the crosshair positioning? wow just wow
well that and the online community sucked. bunch of kids and vexing people. But ultimately yes. it bugged me that much.

Who keeps reviving this thread? Zagashi post that solution you got from Spartan 307 in here.
-
maybe you need to see: whos flying above you maybe catch a foots glance if someones on top of you whos on the 2nd story of blah through your peripherals more beautiful scenery above you than the dirt whats going to fall ontop of you more easier and if that doesnt help, maybe this edited picture of the OP's will help you http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2509/blahjo0.jpg

There is no clear answer. The only "answer" we recieved was in halo 2's bonus dvd footage. they said they screwed up and the bullets were hitting below the crosshair..so..instead of doing the smart thing and bringing the bullets to the center of the screen. They get lazy and pull the crosshair down. This is a huge problem for me... for ME... not everyone else, though a good amount of you seem to agree. But thats whats going on with the messed up sight position. Im probably just going to rent halo 3 and finish the campaign. i dont plan on keeping it due to this. I know i know.. its a stupid reason to you.. but its a stupid reason to me to have the crosshairs where they shouldnt be. Almost all the 3rd person view weapons and turrets have centered sights so why doesnt the fps view have it? Bungie may not answer but im gonna bug the hell out of them as soon as i can find a way to contact the members. At the very least have a friggen option. =\ I dont need this game ending up like an expansion pack to halo 2.
Posted by: Pesky wow someone woke up on the wrong side of there mom today. it looks perfectly fine, its not in the middle but it looks more natural. so quit ur whining and if it bothers you that much then go play the other 2 and leave halo 3 to us who have tolerance for change.
Exactly, he's like one of those CoD extreme fans who think CoD4 is going to suck because it's not set in WWII like the past three games.

I like it, I don't know why, I guess it is just a cosmetic issue.
-
Everybody has to get used to it, your not the only one who used a slightly-not-in-the-center reticle, infact i didn't even know it wasn't in the middle until i looked in this thread.
-
no the second picture is deff not at the middle of the screen. its about the same as all the halo's were the crosshairs have always been lower then middle cause ur gun is lower then ur visor. DUH you fail
-
you stopped playing Halo 2 because of the crosshair positioning? wow just wow
-
You sir would be wrong. I actually STOPPED playing Halo 2 because of this. no joke. I simply could NOT get used to it. I hope theres an update to possibly have an option or something to focus the center of the sights. i too am pissed that bungie has not responded to this. it seriously has bothered me that much. also its not 99% of people have not noticed it. a good amount have noticed it in fact. i remember when there would be multiple threads with people wondering why the game felt a bit weird. Then we noticed and basically wondered what the hell. [Edited on 08.28.2007 4:16 PM PDT]
Posted by: Zagashi
Posted by: Platinum Racer I would have to agree that this is a pretty stupid/pointless thing to complain about. I like it down there anyways. It would feel stupid and Chief pointing his gun up at everything? He would feel so much shorter. Why aren't you complaining about how he can flip a tank but can't hold SMGs straight? Or where he gets all those ammo clips from?
Because none of those affect gameplay as much as this.
It doesn't affect gameplay, period. It's not some glitch in the game, or lag, or anything like that. I'ts built into the game. And obviously you chose to play Halo 2 more than just the first time you picked it up, regardless of whether it was centered or not. Who really cares why it's like that; either deal with it and enjoy one helluva game, or don't play if it's that big of a deal.

Looks like I'm the only person in the world that noticed the change and didn't give a crap..........

I like it...and to me...thats all that matters. Now where did I put those....Honey!!!! Where IS MY SUPER SUIT!!!! And can I get some fruit snacks to go. Dang woman...WHERE...IS...MY...SUPER SUIT!!!!
Posted by: Zagashi
Posted by: Zagashi
Posted by: davidk75 By making this thread, you are officially admitting that you are one of the people who are so lame that they have to find petty things like this to complain about in Halo 3. Please stop, for your own good. Good bye.
Why would I be bashing Halo 3, I love Halo more than any other game. It's just anything that I feel might hurt the game, I complain about. I know alot of hardcore fps players Hated Halo 2 for the crosshair not being in the center. And since the majority of you don't mind, or haven't noticed, why not move it u to ensure Halo 3 sells more copies. Insult me now. I dare yah.
Yes, because the game instantly gets better or worse depending on how many copies it sells... Seriously, the position of the crosshair is so inconsequential, no one will refuse to buy the game because it is a quarter of an inch below the center of the screen.
-
Why can't people just get over it? I mean, ITS NOT GOING TO CHANGE. Get over it or don't play the game. Whining about it won't fix anything.
-
hey jaker , die in a fire kid. If Bungie doesn't know what their doing (which is so false in almost every pretense), then why post on their forum? Btw, it doesn't bother me, its unique.
