Maybe its a 56k warning. They are links to pics after all. Anyway on to the long post.
Halos physics/animations are below average for such a highly ABOVE average game.
Have you ever seen a dead body with its knees bended? Usually when you die in Halo you are in the "debug" model mode. You know the position im talking about.
I think Halos limb constraints are too...CONSTRAINED! At least when the animation is over. Once the animation is done the body is always in an unnatural looking position.
Halo has about 7-8 designated animations that are old and just wont go away. Where is the variety??!?!
Example.
-----
Roll and Knees
-----
Number 1 in the picture is the dreaded "death roll". You usually go flying, then you roll into this position. Yuck.
Number 2 is the "on your knees" death. Bland and overused like much of these deaths. This is one that you'll see ALOT playing halo.
Lets look at another one.
---
Flailing
----
This one deserves its own because out of all the bland animations, this is the worst. And by my vote this is the ONLY ONE THAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. The flailing arms animation. Horrible, old, and it looks lame. People may argue for my side that one wouldn't be alive to flail his arms anyway, and while thats true, the main point is it just looks so nasty. Remove it puh-leaze.
Heres two more....Actually the final two on my "old" list.
---
Falling over and Death
----
Now number 5 is the "fall over and die" animation. This one you'll probably see the most out of all the outdated animations. You get shot up, and just fall to the right.
Number 6 is not really an animation. But what happens after "physics" take over. 95% of the time when playing halo, you'll be in this position no matter what. Either face UP or face Down, with VERY MINOR variants. Maybe an arm slightly bent, or your head bent from a rock. The physics could be better knowing that bungie is such a capable developer. I honestly think they could do it but they just don't feel like it.
Although that only brings it up to 5 animations/deaths. I only list the lame ones. I also had a number 4 somewhere but I couldn't remember where i saved it.
The animations that I didn't to put in this old/lame list is the "shot to the face" where the spartan almost does a backflip and the one to the back of his head where he almost does a front flip. Those are good in my book. Again, in all halo has only about 7-8 animations.
But, No Im not done. I will now list animations that Halo should have. Yup. This is a rant. So sue me if I spell somehting wrong (irony).

Cool deaths 1
---
1 is pretty self explanatory. You die and it actually looks real. The spartan is holding a wound.
2. is an alternative to the flailing arms animations. Your body is projected from the explosion and your limp limbs fling in front of you. This also can be done if the person is not facing the explosion.
---
Cool deaths 2
---
3 is kinda the same. Just on the ground instead. The spartan is holding his wound with a leg bent for dynamism.
4 is amazing. The car bumps you and your alive for a sec, and try to brace for the fall, but you crush into the ground and die. The position of the legs are important too. It signifies motion and the spartan actually being hit. Again dynamism was trying to be achieved here.
This is just SOME examples of the many animations they could do.
I just think that with such an amazing game, why skimp out on the physics/animations?! I mean only 8 animations tops?!?! There should AT LEAST BE 50 animations for such a high profile game. Even though it has physics the animations are important and they should have variety. Multiplayer is the bread and butter of Halo and someone is ALWAYS dying. This should be a huge priority.
Either remove ALL the animations and have dedicated, realistically "cool" physics or actually put some effort into the animations like I suggest.
I hope that that was just an effect of the beta and the final game will have more. If it doesn't it will feel immensely lacking. Flame away, because I know most of you follow bungie like its a god and you act like it can do no wrong.... :(

You should stop flailing when you get shot. the flailing should be when you fall of cliffs of death. until someone shoots the flailing body of the falling
Posted by: Timothy6381
Posted by: orochi03 Yeah. I have Fallout for xbox....it has some nice physics. Gears of War does too.
Gears? well i have to disagree. i dont know how many armord bodys i can move just by walking over them. i think it has very bad physics. and i like Halos. i like how the "swims" in the air. very funny in my opinon. On that note Cheif does weight 500 pounds. so he wouldnt go flying by a explosions that happen in Halo. besides a tank shell or bansee bomb
I would like you, and the guy above your post to read through all 5 pages. Because what you have said, others have already done so. And I properly responded to them. I am not going to say something 5 times over and over again. This is not an ample argument. Its well known that Halo does not play based upon the REAL weight of a spartan. Again, read through my responses and you'll see why.

That video, was the most horrific thing i've seen in ages. And I saw I guy slowing walk across traintracks and step off the other side just as the train Blew past him. ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK.

Halos physics/animations are below average for such a highly ABOVE average game. Really? I look at Crackdown and don't see much difference. ============================================================= Have you ever seen a dead body with its knees bended? Usually when you die in Halo you are in the "debug" model mode. You know the position im talking about. Bended? Did you mean bent? Actually, I've never seen a dead body outside of a coffin, and I hope never to. However, I have read about people getting shot (namely a short text about the death of the german spy Mata Hara) and the description of her death seems identical to the death animation in Halo. ============================================================= I think Halos limb constraints are too...CONSTRAINED! At least when the animation is over. Once the animation is done the body is always in an unnatural looking position. might 800 pounds of armour be an explanation? A might I point out that joint ligaments aren't nessarily going to survive a fight like the ones in Halo. ============================================================= Number 1 in the picture is the dreaded "death roll". You usually go flying, then you roll into this position. Yuck. Number 2 is the "on your knees" death. Bland and overused like much of these deaths. This is one that you'll see ALOT playing halo. That "death roll" is quite a natural position. Leastaways, I believe it to be a natural position for a person that died instantly ============================================================= This one deserves its own because out of all the bland animations, this is the worst. I admittedly don't like it either, but I can live with it. And if you are at all curious, I would have completely ignored you if it weren't for the "puh-leaze." That's what set me off. ============================================================= Now number 5 is the "fall over and die" animation. Number 5 is the most realistic animation of them all. As for number 6, would you rather see the Spartan model strike a pose while laying on the ground? ============================================================= Although that only brings it up to 5 animations/deaths. I only list the lame ones. I also had a number 4 somewhere but I couldn't remember where i saved it. Reserved for when you find number four. ============================================================= The animations that I didn't to put in this old/lame list is the "shot to the face" where the spartan almost does a backflip and the one to the back of his head where he almost does a front flip. Those are good in my book. Again, in all halo has only about 7-8 animations. Actually, those animations are the least realistic in Halo. A person isn't going to do a backflip when shot by any number of bullets, they simply don't have the momentum. ============================================================= But, No Im not done. I will now list animations that Halo should have. Yup. This is a rant. So sue me if I spell somehting wrong (irony). I'm on the phone with my lawyer as we speak. ============================================================= 1 is pretty self explanatory. You die and it actually looks real. The spartan is holding a wound. 2. is an alternative to the flailing arms animations. Your body is projected from the explosion and your limp limbs fling in front of you. This also can be done if the person is not facing the explosion. That's a position of death as a result of bleeding out. I only expect that in Halo if Bungie introduces B.O. deaths. The second one of these is is one of only two things that seem like good ideas that you posted here. ============================================================= 3 is kinda the same. See the first part of the previous rebuttal for 3, and 4 is the other thing that isn't actually completely idiotic. ============================================================= I just think that with such an amazing game, why skimp out on the physics/animations?! I mean only 8 animations tops?!?! There should AT LEAST BE 50 animations for such a high profile game. Even though it has physics the animations are important and they should have variety. Multiplayer is the bread and butter of Halo and someone is ALWAYS dying. This should be a huge priority. 8 animations are MORE than the game needs, because it only technically needs one. ============================================================= Either remove ALL the animations and have dedicated, realistically "cool" physics or actually put some effort into the animations like I suggest. I hope that that was just an effect of the beta and the final game will have more. If it doesn't it will feel immensely lacking. Flame away, because I know most of you follow bungie like its a god and you act like it can do no wrong.... :( I don't think of Bungie as gods. Saints, perhaps, but not gods. not yet anyway. ============================================================= Might I point out that if you don't like what you see, you don't have to look at the screen? In fact, I recommend it, because it'll make my killing you a whole lot easier.

Let's just wait until the game is released. If you are basing your animation conclusions on the BETA then this topic is useless. The BETA code was subject to change, it changed. Heck, the BETA was more of an ALPHA but polished and shiny. They wouldn't put all of the animations in at that stage in case it crashes. Also, you can die against a rock (in Halo 2). Just find a conveniently placed rock and... well... die. Some of the animations you have suggested are in no way realistic either, i.e. the whooshing back from an explosion...

http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/30676/ Look at this guy when he falls in real life. It is from skateboarding and he fell 40 feet

Bungie, please drop online co-op and make it look cooler when I get owned. /sarcasm
-
bungie already exceeded my expectations im not complaining
-
2 words....shut up............WHO CARES ABOUT THE WAY YOU DIE IN A GAME!!!!! its all about the action.....
-
They obviously can't make new ones, because as above said, the game is approximatley 50 days to ship. We will all have to see for ourselves, and obviously there are going to be new animations, you can't just expect the animators to just sit around there doing nothing for years... right? right. But we could guess what they are.
-
I don't think it's the case that people
follow bungie like its a god and you act like it can do no wrong.... :(
they just don't care about little things like the flailing animation. I'd rather have the game be really fun and balanced than have great animations. Sure, it would be nice, but why -blam!- about it now? It's like 50 days from release. The crumple effect, Bungie, use thecrumple effect! When I shoot somebody in the head, I want their heads to snap backwards as they slide forward. Then they shall fall down.
-
(Drawings of death animations provided by Mrs. Templeton's Kindergarten class.) Anyway... The animations are a wee bit old, but they're a minor thing that Bungie shouldn't focus on. They've fine-tuned a lot of things since the Beta, so maybe death animations is one of them. Personally, I don't mind the repetitive deaths; I don't really like being killed anyway, so seeing my dead body do cool things after I die doesn't do much for me. [Edited on 08.05.2007 12:23 AM PDT]

Isn't it possible that the armor could affect someone's movement as they're dieing or after their death? [Edited on 08.05.2007 12:14 AM PDT]
Posted by: Killpill28 Spartans do not have time to hold their wounds before they die. It is part of the experiments done to them for survival, they don't feel the pain, they fight until they die. So the hold the wounds thing will not work. AND WHY CAN'T PEOPLE LET FLAILING ARMS STAY! That is something that is Halo, it has ALWAYS been there. (This is not a flame post)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLIIZ5HHHE0 even IF thats true, that only eliminates like 3 or 4 animations out of a possible 50. You know, Bungie could learn a lot from the Source engine, even though its pretty old, it has freaking awesome physics!
Posted by: orochi03 Yeah. I have Fallout for xbox....it has some nice physics. Gears of War does too.
Yeah going realy slow in a junker and sending things flying into the sky yeah it has great physics

did u put any cool animations that are old? my personal favorite the head shot spin. u ge head shoted and your body is spined by the force of the collsion its the coolest animation in all of halo and is just a small treat for a good sniper to see. i always think of michael jackson for some reason when i see it

nice drawings, i think yours looks very cool, but im happy with the beta physics, maybe they are working on them cause your drawing's were steller i espesally (i know that i cant spell that word!!) the explosion ones. though i must say the guy getting hit by the hog looks like he "dropped the soap" but other than that it was very nice.
Posted by: inky7442 I agree that halo 3 could do with updating in its death animations, especially the ones where a body is magically propped up by straight arms and you waste two sniper bullets on it, or the weird pefectly flat body with a bent knee (possibly fantastic drawing 1) that is always flat, even on steep hills or rocks. while they dont break the game in any way, i would like to see some good animations and ragdolling, as long as no bodies look alive. unfortunately, it's either in or out at this point.
Who cares. What I care about is the updated teabagging animation. The ragdoll effect stays alive while my crotch rides their face. Freakin awesome.
