Would Fred outrank the Master Chief? *GoO Spoilers*
Well, would he?
I mean, look at Kurt. He was Lieutenant Commander and he didn't disclose info about the S-III's to Vice Admiral. Also, he was part of the council that engineered the Spartan Threes (Parangosky, Rich, Gibson, Ackerson). What's more, he assumed command of Blue Team's mission to Onyx EVEN when the command of the mission to Fred came from Lord Hood, the big cheese. Now Fred is Lt. Comm. What do you think this could mean?

It's not a matter of wanting a rank. Having the highest enlisted rank without being an officer means that he has control of every ground force he encounters. That would prevent any complications involving rank, complications that could eventually cause things that need to happen to not happen. it's more of a technicality than anything else.

They are appointed by the Chief of Naval Operations to serve as a spokesperson to address the issues of enlisted personnel to the highest positions in the Navy. As such, they are the senior enlisted advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and Chief of Naval Personnel. So they are of a Non combantant role mainly but if they have to fight they fight but Master Chief Petty Officers can be sent into combat. I don't think John would want a better rank I think he just wants to save the Human race.

nope. he's still enlisted, and being so he needs to have command of all other enlisted personnel, therefore he must be the MCPON. if he was an officer he would not be allowed a field commission due to the fact that they can't keep losing officers.

But take a look at the UNSC for a moment. The Chief is the closest thing they have to a savior. I'm sure they don't mind letting him have the rank of MCPON, especially in a time like this, when ranks are the least of everyone's concerns.

There is only one Master chief petty officer of the navy, only one person could hold this rank and they would most likely be on Earth where the HQ is, not on Reach.

Cowtipper beat me to it. John is a (or the) Master Chief Petter Officer of the Navy. Of course, Fred outranks him because of his officer's standing at Lieutenant Commander. Either way, the Chief would take Fred apart if he had to, rank or no rank. :P

heh, you guys are funny. the "chief" as you guys call him, is a Masterchief Petty Officer of the Navy. not Masterchief Petty Officer either, there is a difference. That is the highest enlisted rank. Lieutenant Commander would DEFINITELY be higher than MCPON. the "Chief" is not a Chief Petty Officer, that is three ranks lower that what he really is.

Speaking of Fred, I have a sneaking suspicion that CPO Mendez is a Spartan 1. AND we might see that character surface in Contact: Harvest. Just a hunch though.

yep... Master Chief has the highest enlisted rank... keyword, enlisted. Technically, no matter how high up his enlisted rank is, he still has to take orders from an officer.

Besides, in the Spartan family we've seen how rank is treated, anyway. Dr. Halsey is a civilian and she has more 'power' than most. That is, until Kurt lays down the law on her ass.
