Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter

This thread has been locked until further notice. Click here to find out why! Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter are some of my all time favourite games and it’s time to pay little homage to another of Bungie’s Greatest Hits. This howto intends to assist the reader in getting a copy of Myth, and getting the most out of the experience. However, I am not a fountain of myth lore by any standards – I would appreciate any assistance, pointers, corrections and help that you guys can give. This Guide is broken into 8 sections, and due to the character limits enforced on posts, I’ve had to place each chapter in their own post. The chapters are: 1. Overview and History of Myth 2. Getting a Copy of Myth II 3. Installing Myth II 4. Myth: TFL in Myth II 5. Myth Online 6. Fear, Loathing and Myth Plugins 7. Myth III 8. Myth Links [Edited on 2/24/2006 by Great_Pretender]

 • I just had to add my two cents about how great Myth 1&2 are. For anyone who hasn't played, you simply have to find a copy and give it a go. I have yet to see any game like it. The strategy required is unmatched (that's strategy, not tactics). The character types are very well balanced while still being unique. Myth would have been the freaking bomb with live voice chat. Did anyone ever get that working with Myth? A friend and I actually created a code language, a syntax if you will, for shorthand communications (since you had to type in communications in Myth). It was very clever and very efficient. There was a whole set of rules we wrote up, like which order the actions (verbs) and nouns came in. Basically a special Myth grammar. It ended up something like: 2g nh (two ghouls at the north hill) a g/a (attack ghols with archers) I've forgotten the exact rules, and we made it more thorough than I showed here, but it was fun to play around with. And yes, Myth 3 is a disgrace. I remember being very excited to see Myth in true 3D and then so bummed when I actually experienced it. I knew immediately during the training section that M3 was not going to have it. It just didn't have the flair of M1/2. The voices sucked, the sound effects sucked, the writing was terrible, the gameplay didn't hold up, the map designs sucked…bad bad bad.

 • Someone mentioned it on MariusNet. It's in beta on PlayMyth.net, you can play on it its just not been made public yet (I think if ya get in touch with PMA Alan he'd probably talk you through whether you can test it for him or not), but it works.

 • I've played various Bungie games over the years, starting with Marathon on my trusty Apple Mac, and an early demo of the first myth (that's how old I am!). I'm playing Halo 2 on an Xbox (Bungie make great games, don't they), but recently got Soulblighter from e-bay for my Apple Powerbook. Just completed level one, but I am very new to role playing strategy, other than having played Final Fantasy X (still not completed that one!). I generally get the hang of the tutorial on Soulblighter, but I find it actually quite difficult to control troops and not sure how to go about making decisions about where to place them, so a couple of questions: 1) How to you begin making strategic decisions at the start of a level? 2) when the troops are set up, do you need to mark the enemies, or just leave the troops to it for when enemies come in range while you are off trying to sort something else out? Sincerely - Slightly Baffled, Edinburgh

 • Bungie needs to Leave Microsoft, take Halo with 'em, and then repurchase Myth's Sourse, and give it a revamping like no game has ever recieved before!

 • Myth was a masterstroke. I consider Myth to be BUNGiE's finest hour. And their darkest hour was Weekend Warrior. Ok, they only "distributed" WW, but let's face it - that's like giving someone AIDS and then saying "not my fault". Every night I lie awake for a few seconds before sleep takes me, thinking "I wonder if Blades will shut down PlayMyth tomorrow". It's only so long before he has another seizure, posts a megalomaniacal (woah... fake word) rant on his site and pulls the plug. Then I'll get to watch all those miserable refugees come to Mariusnet... that place they've been crapping on for years. Hahaha. Myth. Ah Myth. I'd make a movie out of you if I were an eccentric billionaire - and it'd be really good too.

 • Just for the few who might not have seen it, the only other stickied thread on these forums that Mythers and Ex-Mythers should read (from what I've seen so far at least) is http://www.bungie.com./Forums/posts.aspx?postID=4976046&postRepeater1-p=1 It's my Galleria Mythica, a photo album for all those who've played Myth at some time in their lives.

 • Moderator's Notice: Thank you for saying sorry, but you shouldn't be doing this. If you want help, and you're going to use someone elses thread to do it, please do it with a thread that has something to do with what you're asking. And go in the right forum. This would be Zanzibar, along the side bar over here. >>> But from what I understand XBL is a bit screwy at the moment. Might just have to wait a while.
apologies for piggy backing this thread but as a new user I'm not allowed to start a new thread for 24 hrs.... :( and I'm keen to get on with game play Just signed up to x box live and trying to get onto halo2 but it's saying I've got maps missing?! and these can be downloaded...on bungie.net this proceeds to take me back to absolutely nothing on the xbox so I've signed up here and guess what - there's no info on it here either!!!! so maybe you guys can help - how do I download extra maps in order to play Halo2? or is this just a glitcha nd I need to go back in and re-try? I thought this was going to be easy......ho hum
[Edited on 11/9/2005 by Great_Pretender]

 • Also consider that unless you're doing a 16-player coop, any strategy in a huge battle would disappear. I dunno about you, but if I had a super long line of archers behind a big mass of heron guards, I'd just use the archers, use the herons to kill stragglers, rinse and repeat for every enemy group. Screw micromanagement, when you've got a thousand soldiers what's a few casualties? That would get old very fast. The gameplay of controlling a small group of warriors is far more interesting than a huge battle - if you want that, go watch a movie or something.

 • You can play Frenzy of the Damned, found at ProjectMagma, which is the Rabican - Ravanna duel. You can also get stuff like Mazzarin's Demise, which is what happened when the Watcher pwnt Mazz. Myth doesn't really support *huge* armies. Especially back in the day, all the computers would have frozen up. -TGP-

 • One of the few gripes I have with the myth series is that there are few massive, carnage-filled levels that you can play. Sure there are levels like Twice Born and a few others, but most of the other big battles are simply described by the narrator. Like in myth 1, you played a level named The Siege of Madrigal yet the level doesnt even take place in the city! The narrator simply just recounts what happened at madrigal ( which was apparently pretty awesome, complete with rabican outdueling shiver, which we didnt get to witness!) in the next level. And I dont know about you guys but I think i would have more fun leading a suicidal charge agaisnt impossible odds rather than kill a guy in white armor :) And in Myth 2 soulblighter had to have some army to destroy covenant and scales yet we couldnt participate in the defense of those cities. All we are told is that the seventh legion was sent to stop them( what exactly happened to the 7th legion?). I guess we there would be gameplay issues or something like that but it still would have been cool.

 • I have never played Myth or Marathon. It is true also that I cant find them(hope I dont get flamed). But I think that anyone who puts down Bungie or their early games should leave and never come back. These men and women have probably been playing before I or anyone else were born so respect them. They most likely could kick your or my ass at any game. Even though I have never played the game kudos to you Smee for your dedicated research. As for all of you who yell at Bungie for "screwing up halo" go kill yourselves or I will as Toadkiller Dog said"Go drench you in oil and light you on fire". I personally admire bungie for their excellent and hard work. But as I am saying this some little idiot is on the forums flaming Bungie. So if you hate it soooo much stop playing and get off the forums. Because we dont want you here. I am 13 years old and yet I seem like one of the only ones who have an ounce of sense(emphasis an only one"s"). Please keep our forums and games clean. Respect Bungie and it original games !! • I would also like to mention that the gaming demeographic is in fact getting older. Whoever brought this up is correct. As many of us who grew up with decent games age, we continue playing our style of games. While I do play Halo, it pains me to see that Myth has lost its server on Bungie.net. I still remember cheering on Clan Plaid to whoop Blade of Thorns, so I would prefer if Myth regained some of its power with Bungie. The more years that pass by, the more impatient and hyperactive new gamers seem to get. I would like to formerly say this to all of these smack-talking, hyperactive little Halo fanboys that seem to lack understanding for the importance of Myth: " MYTH AND MARATHON ARE THE GAMES THAT CREATED BUNGIE. IF YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE TWO TITLES AND INSIST ON FLAMING THOSE OF US WHO PLAYED THEM AND THUS MADE HALO POSSIBLE, LEAVE THIS FORUM NOW, OR I WILL PERSONALLY HUNT YOU DOWN AND TROW-KICK YOUR ASS OFF THIS PLANET. I'M BEGINNING TO REGRET EVER BANGING ALL OF YOUR MOTHERS, I HAD NO IDEA I WOULD BE THE DADDY OF SUCH WHINY, IMPATIENT LITTLE -blam!-ES." That being said, I would like to know where I could download the Marathon games. Since playing them, I have obviously gotten a new computer, and I am interested in playing them again.

 • I would like to commend you for posting this topic. I personally grew up with Myth (I've been playing Myth TFL since I was 8 years old, it was the first game I mastered). I would also like to mention to those of you new to Myth now that I have yet to find another game that has the style and challenge of Myth and Myth 2. I have played many strategy games since then, and none recquire the amount of focus and cunning that Myth needed. The fact that the guide has not played Myth 3 forces me to inform you of this: Myth III is an atrocity to the name of Myth. Whoever was coordinating the production of Myth III should drench themselves in oil and light themselves on fire. The graphics in Myth III are actually worse, and the units recquire little skill to use. There is little strategy needed, as some units simply cannot kill certain others. Those of you interested in the Myth storyline should know that it was inspired by Glen Cook's "Black Company" books. Readers of the series will notice striking resemblances to the story of Myth, as well as something familiar about my name.

 •
Posted by: Neil Let me give you the 411 on whats up. Microsoft is out for money - not making awsome and original games. Microsoft's fans mostly consist of 15 year olds who are ADD. They enjoy blowing things up and killing things without using too much brain power. So... why make an RTS game where most of their fans won't buy it when they can keep making fps games and bring in the money? Think about it... Thanks for abandoning the PC/Mac community, Jason tool
Actually, the gaming demographic is more around the 21 year old age.
